Permanently customizing gauge display on megatune
 

Can these things be done?

When I open the display, I usually change what gauges are displayed, and prefer a different layout, but have to reset the panel every time I open it.

I would also wonder if I can display more/less gauges.

Are there options for different gauge faces?

Can I change the ranges of the gauges in order to have the needles point to the top, so I can know they are where they need to be without having to really pay attention to them?

Yes.

Under C:\Program Files\MegaSquirt\MegaTune2.25\mtCfg open the file msns-extra.ini and look for the section entitled [FrontPage]. You can select (from the list above in [GaugeConfigurations]) which gauges go in which positions.



I'm pretty sure that the number and appearance of the gauges cannot be changed. Use TunerStudio instead. It's more customizable in this regard.

Also, TunerStudio is the officially sanctioned interface of the MS3, which means that it's probably going to become the new standard.

Oh I didn't know about the MS3 connection... looks like its time to start fiddling. That easier to modify gauge setup seems nice also for my want to attempt digital dash supplement setup.

I'm seriously considering an indash display using an old tablet PC. That would be hipper than wearing my gf's Hello Kitty undies while listening to Natalie Portman's Shaved Head.

There's nothing wrong with MegaTune if you're running MS1 or MS2.

Those wishing to do full sequential injection on MS2 and wishing to access VE Trim will have to switch over to TunerStudio, as will everybody planning on an MS3, but if neither of those are you, you can stick with MegaTune.

I'm suggesting only that if you want to switch to something else for the sole purpose of doing pretty gauges, switch to TunerStudio rather than Megatunix, as the former is probably going to be the dominant platform in the future.

Do you have a specific tablet in mind that will physically fit into the dash? Mine's mounted on a post beside the center console (although that's going to be going away soon.)

What I have at hand....going to steal my daughters playtoy...an old Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500.

What an interesting coincidence. My current tablet is a Fujitsu Stylistic 3400, and I recently picked up an LT C-500 that I was going to replace it with until I decided to do something a bit more unconventional.

Were you planning to mount the tablet actually in the dash? It seems a bit large, at least relative to the center console of my '92.

I was thinking about putting it where Robert put the "clipboard" control panel in Red Beast, but I really want it to be higher, and don't know if I could configure display vertical anyhow.

I'm flexible right now since I've completely ripped out my interior...I just barely put the dash bar, dash harness, and steering column/wheel back in place today. I want to fab my own dash to get the most amount of usable display space.

My wife likes heat in winter though, so plans may change.

As far as in a stock configuration I'm thinking about a swing mount that tucks away to left of center column...and comes up to right side of gauge pod. I haven't mocked this up at all...just brainfartin'.

Gotcha. Robert's was a copy of mine, in fact we both had the same tablet. Here's the one I did:

The bracket on the lower right is for the CB radio- it's a perfect spot for it on group runs.

Overall, it's not horrible, but in a DD it's a bit obtrusive. The C500 is smaller, but not much much since it's got that sidebar panel.

While that sure beats the hell out of a laptop in the passenger seat, i'll be damned if that isn't the nerdiest car mod i've ever seen.

I too have been toying with the idea of an in-dash screen. But something more along the lines of a 7" to replace the center part of the gauge cluster with a carpc.

On the tunerstudio subject, I seem to remember giving it a try and not being able to get it to work at all (and not being able to find much info about it). Is there something specific you have to do to switch from MT to TS?

I mounted the docking station permanent to the dash, and can slip the tablet right out. I find it takes forever to analyze a log with this old tablet, so I network to my home computer. I bent a piece of stainless sheet to fit between the dash and the dash pad, then screwed the dock to it. I like the center location up high, I hope it wont create too much of a blind spot.

Tuner Studio does have some learning curve too, I haven't actually used it in the car yet, but have played with settings etc, once I think I have it correct, I will try it out.

Another full day on the car, and I should be able to drive it again, its been apart for 2 years. There is still probably 2 years worth of work to get it where I want it.

Tuner Studio is the shnitz, far FAR better than megatune. It's all the little things like the visual graph on AE tuning and histogram, the difference report it does is brilliant, also it configures itsself brilliantly if you tune other peoples cars.

I can't use MegaTune anymore, a poor relation now IMO

tuner studio is pretty bomb. I don't think I'll use the 3d tables, but its purdy.

I changed my mind, tuner studio sucks.

From the few minutes I tinkered with it.... I'm looking forward to using it as a live gauge setup in the car. Let alone as a tuning platform.

Too many errors and teh extra crap it does, I don't need.
