In the mean time, grabbed another screen with better resolution and (hopefully) 3d printing a trim surround for it with the printer i've been playing around with for the last couple months. |
Which screen did you go for? I'm trying to decide between something like what you're doing (Android Auto and Tuner Studio) or just trying to do a gauge cluster replacement.

I am still itching to possibly do a gauge cluster swap, especially now that I've got a spare 7" just kicking around...haha I do have a rooted fire 7" that could possibly take that job on as well, I just need to finish building a bluetooth adapter for the MS |
Interesting stuff. My hangup on the gauge cluster would be losing speedo/odometer and some of the other things the stock gauge cluster has.

Also, I may be misremembering, but I think some years have the VSS signal handled in the cluster, so you'll have to resolve that as well. |
Slightly small update - not a ton of progress, but making a few changes and updates.
First, working on getting a different expansion board. The one I have doesn't quite fit my needs. Trying something a little different and more simple, so we'll see when it arrives. Next, power - never was able to get the shutdown process to work correctly and always seemed to have the low power indicator popping on and off. Came across a couple interesting options here that I'm going to try - https://bluewavestudio.io/community/...d.php?tid=1391 Finally, very much a work in progress, but attempted my very first STL remix in Tinkercad to create a mount for this all to fit in dash nicely. Its very rough and may need some more adjustments before the final version is ready to be printed. Part way through I realized I printed the wrong version and it was lifting anyway, but here: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...05feb08849.jpg |
Now that I've had a little bit of time where it hasn't been raining, here's a quick test fitment shot:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ad8ee354b3.jpg Had to do some cut some pieces from the print to fit, but its almost there with position. Be kind and pay no mind the radio harness; the previous owner did one of the worst hackjobs I've ever seen. Its mostly fixed now https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f42606c4c9.jpg Top right gap was due to the print lifting from the bed, better print should not have it. There is a bit of a gap between the tombstone and the bezel, but that's going to take another revision to the piece that may happen sometime in the future. In the process of installing a new mainboard on my printer now (SKR 1.4 turbo), so hopefully once that's done I can get a working print of this together |

Getting a little closer to being happy with my remixing ability... Too bad we're supposed to be getting snow tomorrow. And the printer upgrade's still in progress... |
Taking me forever, but posting some updates. First, just about everything has been changed/updated/replaced since the first attempt.
Out with the RPi3b, replaced with a Rpi4 Out went the old breakout HAT, replaced with a much simpler adapter Software has been updated to version 9.0 Old remixed face replaced with a completely scratch built one. Rear cover is something I modified (poorly) to work temporarily for now, would like to come up with something better. Still working on power supply, 3 different possible setups to test out. Need to find my bench PS to avoid constant trips to the car. A few shots to work with https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1902b9e232.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a57409de28.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...25435ee3bc.jpg |
Great work.

Incremental update? Remixed a rear cover to mount everything to, even if its not perfect.
-No more low voltage warnings (at least on the bench setup) -Safe shutdown working -Tunerstudio installed -Tunerstudio added to OAP menu! No more switching to Raspian desktop to run! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c082688e45.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...62ef3116be.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...238de3a20a.jpg |
So what do you have left to do? I don't see android auto on there at the moment, but I assume that's just a matter of installing the program. Will you have bluetooth music streaming with this unit or audio only through AA with usb?

The app page is a secondary menu of additional programs; the home page has the more basic options of phone / rear camera / music / etc This should allow for audio via AA or strictly bluetooth, whichever makes sense at the time. Since AA has a limited set of apps available, both options have their benefits. Now I really just need to get everything physically in the car and run the wiring I'll need for the amplifier(s). Also get TS sync'd up with the MS3X and try some things out. That'll happen as soon as its not 90+ outside (no garage, no shade, completely black car...) |
Nice. I sympathize with you on the temperature thing. The only way I can work on mine is to get up at 6 and do it before I start work. Anything after 8am is just miserable.

HI there, this looks great! Did you ever get it mounted and wired up in your car?
I'm working on the same project for my 1990 Miata, but I'm trying to figure out how to mount the screen and relays I'll be using. I was wondering if you'd be willing to share the stl file you are using to print the screen mount/enclosure? Thanks! -David |

While I've got a 95, I'm using this with a 96.5 double din tombstone that I scrounged up prior to this project. I ended up tweaking this thing a few times and still ended up having to do some cutting/triming/adjusting to the mount as it sits now. I have a feeling there's going to be some additional odd fitment issues to be found if using on an even earlier NA setup. I'll see if I can dig up what I've currently got when I have access to that computer... |
That's understandable, I'm fortunate to have nice sunny weather right now in California and no babies yet so taking advantage of it while I still can. :)
Ah I see, is the 96.5 double din tombstone the same as the JDM one people swap out to? If so I might have to look for one as well. I don't mind if there is still fitment issues with your design, I can always modify it as well. I'm just barely starting to learn how to make/modify models so I can 3D print them at home, it's quite a learning curve though. Yes please, let me know if you have a chance to get that file I'd really appreciate it. |
