Thinking about Megasquirt, which unit?

The 18% off coupon has me thinking about picking up a Megasquirt unit again, but I'm not entirely sure which one. My car is a '92 with the 1.6L still in place (no immediate plans to swap in a 1.8), bone-stock for now with plans down the line for a simple turbo (though not anytime soon). The MSPNP of course is very appealling, but at just shy of $600 before discount, that is out of my price range. The DIYPNP at $425 is much more reasonable, but still a bit more than I'd like to spend right now.

Which brings me to these two units:
MegaSquirt-I EFI System - SMD PCB3.57 - Assembled Unit - http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...nit-p-164.html

MegaSquirt-I Programmable EFI System PCB2.2 - Assembled Unit - http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...unit-p-34.html

I'm assuming I'd need a conversion harness to make either of these work, which would be the catch.

I've been watching the classifieds regularly too, but the PNP units aren't that much cheaper than new, and almost always still out of my price range. I am leaving room for a wideband and such also of course.

So for the guys who have done it up/down/backwards/and sideways, am I crazy for even considering these as a possibility? Is it really that much more of a headache to go one of these routes? Is there a benefit to assembling my own instead of using one of these, via this thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/useful-saved-posts-8/how-make-install-your-own-diy-megasquirt-13676/

if you're going to build it yourself, don't get the v2.2 board, get the v3.0 board or v3.57.

What is the benefit of the 3.0/3.57 over the 2.2?

ms2 pcb v3 atleast

I'm looking for a "why". I know people successfully using MS1, and clearly cars were running on the old 2.2 stuff also. I'm not doing anything fancy with my setup, not running COPs, water injection, or anything else.

Techsalvager 08-25-2011 12:20 PM

board wise 3.0 is a better design for support of newer items and generally is better supported now a days by the community than the old 2.2 board.

Braineack 08-25-2011 12:27 PM

v2.2 board requires creativity to add any extras. that includes idle control.

stinkycheezmonky 08-25-2011 12:29 PM

Ok, idle control would be a good thing to have, and would be a great reason to not have 2.2 :) Any issues with MS1 in that realm?

Braineack 08-25-2011 12:34 PM

not, it's just the board layout, that's the only difference.

stinkycheezmonky 08-25-2011 12:46 PM

Great. So how about the preassembled, but non-DIY unit? Would I have to modify that to work on a Miata, or just make the right harness?

Matt Cramer 08-25-2011 02:57 PM

Yes, you'll need a couple mods as well as making your own harness. Once you factor in a connector and wiring harness, your price isn't going to be that much less than a DIYPNP.
