Time to start learning and play with tuning

Alright guys I want to start playing with my tune. I know these are just a start but let me know thoughts on VE and spark. I plan to update firmware and go from there. Started playing with closed loop idle and that's improving.

95 miata
DIYPNP
MP62
TDR intercooler
Large Throttle body
RX7 460 cc injectors
Batch injection
Dyno tuned 235 whp/197 ftlbs

Can provide MSQs and some datalogs. Car runs great on a base tune from oracle tuning. But I know we didn't have enough time to fully tune all variables cruise etc.

I guess you paid for this tune but was it really necessary or even beneficial to have rpm and boost scaling so all over the place? Different between fuel and spark, ramping up and down at different rates, different interpolation between cells.

I know the argument is for finer resolution in some areas, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the way your VE table is scaled.

Examples of even scaling:

That's a VE table. Notice even RPM increments of 500, and even kPa increments of 10 up to atmospheric pressure and then 20 after that--no guesswork involved for understanding interpolation.

Spark is the same scaling. If it's ever tuned on a loading dyno you can adjust fuel and spark at even breakpoints when you lock engine speed.

Now I know the fuel and spark are already scaled and tuned in your case, and it would be a ton of work to throw much of it out the window. I'm just not seeing any advantage to jumping around in rpm scaling by 300, 400, 500 and 600rpm increments arbitrarily. Likewise the spark and VE boost axis are mismatched, especially at low loads.

Couple things. No we did not pay much attention to scaling to be completely honest. However it had a base tune in it and we worked from there. (Bought DIYPNP used from a running car; non boosted though scaled for boost...) We made some changes to help us in certain areas and that was all. Your point is very valid and I appreciate it. I know a lot more now then I did in March when this was tuned. I also don't have 16x16 spark maps... So not sure I can make them match as nicely as yours. (Though firmware upgrades may change some of that... think I'm on 3.1.1 or something) Thank you for the information. I can likely build a new map with even scaling based on my old map. Yes it is a lot of work but the experience and practice will be worth it. I always have my solid running base tune to go back to.

Keep the advice and information coming!
