Timing Issues
 

well, i have came a long way with the help of this board, thank you.

final issue, i am having issues getting timing sorted out. i hooked a timing light up to #1 spark plug wire and shot the crank, but there are 3 marks, i used the one the farthest left on the crank pulley. the light has a adjustable advance, and it indicated the timing to be around 52 degrees advanced.

all four cylinders have spark and fuel, just cannot get the timing figured out.

i am using the stock 97 CAS, using the mods from DIYAutoTune, direct drive from the MS1 V3, msns.

megatune is configured for generic wheel, and in the wheel decoder i have it set the way braineack has in his how-to, i went direct drive due to a defective ignitor.

can someone post up their wheel settings if thats the problem.

52° seems like a bit much, to the point where I question whether or not the engine would even run.

I'd thought that '96-'97 pulleys had two marks- one at 10°BTDC and the other at TDC. I'd suggest as a first step that you confirm which mark is which on your pulley, which is quite simple. Pull the #1 spark plug and insert a wooden dowel or similar into the hole. Turn the crank by hand, observing the dowel to note the point at which it achieves TDC, then compare this to the pulley. If you have a dial gauge handy, it's possible to be quite accurate with this method.

When you observed the timing, did you first go into the Spark Settings screen in Megatune and set the "Fixed Angle" box to 10? Also, do you have "Spark Output Inverted" set to Yes?

when it starts now it barely will fire over, sounds like a locomotive, with some serious engine shaking.

i am leaning toward timing issues, due to 1 and 3 firing, 2 and 4 are hot but not as hot as the others(squirt bottle on the header tubes).

i have attached my MSQ just incase someone can tell me where i have went wrong.

checked tdc to crank, two marks, one at 10 tdc and another at tdc. which one do you use?

when #1 is TDC, it's not at 10° before TDC. ;)

fixed angle set to 10, and spark output inverted. i tried the mspnp96-97 msq file. and changed the settings in the ignition setup. the general setup was pretty close except the req_fuel was three times as large, something like 15.3....versus mine which was set at 5.3. am i missing something important?

If you are using DIY's spark mods, you want inverted to "NO"

what injectors are you running? 460s or 550s?

550's, i need the spark to be inverted if running direct drive right?

my req fuel is wrong, ill change that tonight.
