Default Lets make sure i have this right...

Im about ready to buy a megasquirt kit but i want to make sure i understand this before i buy something wrong. i want to use it as a stand alone as well.

The MS1 is the simplest of the 3. It lacks necessary controls if being used as a stand alone system as well as timing control. But there is a firmware mod that adds these needed controls. Can also be upgraded to MS2 or MS3.

The MS2 has all of the features needed to run as a stand alone system out of the box (except a/c if being used). Should do everything you need it to do on a miata and extra features have been added with a modded firmware.

The MS3 is the best option. It has boost specific options as well as better fuel and timing response. It has a 16x16 AE table making htings more precise. It is also a tad overkill for a miata.


It seems i should go with a MS2 for a stand alone system. I would like others inputs on this. Optionally i could do all of the mods to a MS1 to make it stand alone.

It looks like this is going on a 95 miata.

I ask this because most of the information here is a little old and may not be current anymore.

Nothing is required to control the A/C it's an independant system. what MSII can't do is increase the idle speed to compensate for the extra load the A/C compresser ads.

The MS3 is the best option. It has boost specific options as well as better fuel and timing response. It has a 16x16 AE table making htings more precise. It is also a tad overkill for a miata.
Don't get you knickers in a twist over table sizes, in reality 12x12 is more than enough for the average MX5 owner. That said MSII has 16x16 tables on fuel only available if you want them.

MSIII isn't overkill for an MX5, if you can afford it, and you anticipate to use at least some of it's available features at some point in the future, get it.

so the MS3 can adjust idle for a/c? its a little hard to visualize all of the differences when i dont have them right in front of me.

So the other features that would be used of an MS3 would be like the added controls for timing and boost?


* 8 channels sequential fuel control
* 8 channel sequential ignition control
* Individual fuel and spark trim for cylinder by cylinder tuning
* 2 and 3 channel PWM IAC control
* 2 stage nitrous controller
* Table switching for multi-fuel engines
* 2 step launch control
* And more!


so... i see the fuel switching to be very beneficial as well a launch control.

MS1 is a very good standalone system, I'm not sure where you got the idea that it doesn't have timing control, but it sure does. You're forgetting one of the key upgrades when going from MS1 to MS2, which is resolution. MS1 has something like 16x16 tables, and MS2 has something like 24x24. Don't forget more I&Os, including spark and fuel outputs. I don't THINK MS1 can do sequential injection or ignition.

Point is you have some more reading to do and questions to ask.

Also, don't forget DIYPNP... its 'basically' Ms2, but has most of the 'mods' you might want to a regular MS2 3.0 setup ready to go... makes for a cleaner install, and they're faster to assemble imo. Looking back, I wish I had waited and gone the Ms3, ms3x route on a 3.0 board, a little more money but quite a bit more work, but really I nerd out on this crap and spend time on the ms extra forums... if you just want to put something together and not mess with it, ms3 is probably not for you. in the real world its not going to get you more functionality or a justifiable increase in performance. Its not to say that there aren't some benefits, just that if you have to ask, you probably won't fully appreciate the differences

Other then that just go with the MS3 and be done with it.

Well what i really want to do is install a car PC that is constantly hooked up to the MS. I want to tune it in cold weather and warm weather and have it switch between the two (which is advertised on the MS3).

After that i would like to not touch it much.

You don't have to switch 'tunes' for that... really you should never have to 'switch' anything, even if you want to tune for e85 you can get a flex fuel sensor and megasquirt will interpolate based on the percentage of alcohol... Megasquirt is speed density which means it calculates the mass of air in the cylinders based on air temperature and a educated guess at the volume(calculated from the ve table and map sensor)... the intake air temp sensor compensates for outside temp.
