Default Tuning with autotune

I have a 1990 1.6 Turbo MX5.

My MS1v3 with SnS is installed to control the injectors only at the moment.

I've generated a base fuel VE map using the megatune auto generator. Is buying a LC-1 and using the autotune feature the best way to go about generating a decent fuel map?

Should I just use the NB and autotune to develop the low stress part of the table? How would I go about tuning the higher end?

Thanks

I'm not a big fan of autotune. After building a basic map as you did, I used megalogviewer instead. Set your EGO step to 2%, and authority to 15%. Drive around a bit at light load, have logviewer analyze and adjust your map. As it gets closer to "right on", reduce the step and authority. This has gotten me a very nice light load map.

High load, you either need to buy a wideband or pay for the dyno time. Or you could guess. I'll buy the leftover parts! I use the wideband unattached to MS. I drive and my wife tunes. It's quality time.

Autotune looks at the AFR map you input and trys to zero in your fuel vallues to match that preferably with a WB02. I like it alot better than log analyzer esp if you have a map that will drive but just needs more power or economy etc. + you feel changes as they happen. I can autotune most of my map with 15-20 minutes of hard driving etc. Then if i think more or less fuel will help me i adjust my targets and drive it agian noting the difference very easy but to do it yourself you need to pull over to change targets etc. Having someone else drive or just having you drive while someone runs the laptop helps out a ton.

ok im a little frustrated and im sure someone can help me, I just cant seem to get autotune to stop reporting "tuning point out of window" or something like that. Ive read the megamanual section on this and frankly its hard to understand wtf they are trying to say half the time.

The EGO control algorithms all turn off correction (i.e., set the correction factor to 100%) whenever AE, decel, warmup or any number of other enrichment types come active. The 100% EGO value in turn has the effect of turning off the auto-tune.
so i need to turn off all enrichments? Ive tried various methods of making them not turn on

Auto-tune: Tuning point outside window", which indicates that the operating point has gone outside the global x and y limits, so the no action will be taken
ummm ... what are the global x and y limits? Afr too far out of range? out of rpm/kpa range or what?

uh i go into the exhaust gas settings and turn up the authority and size. I dunno if you have tried this mine reports as being out of the tunning window below 2000 rpm and 50 kpa. but once i get into a normal zone it works just fine. you might check your settings to see if the parameters are configurable.

Global x and y limits are the rpm and kpa limits outside of which autotune will not perform adjustments. Changes to the limits are in the megasquirt/car1/mtcfg/custom file. In the first section under "autotune" you can change the limits to your liking. I believe autotune only looks at your EGO correction. If EGO correction is >100%, fuel is added and vice-versa. Turning up the authority and size won't do much if they are already active, such a 1% step 5% autority.

You don't have to turn enrichments off, but no tuning will take place while they are active. Wait till things are warm, don't get into accel enrich, ect.

I never could get autotune to work either. It was always out of the limits, or whatever that error message is. I've found tuning cruise is pretty easy if you have someone else drive and you work the VE table with the laptop. Really light load stuff and high load stuff get tuned on a dyno.

maybe i should just buckle down and finally get a dynotune, but first I would really like to have some sort of steady boost control but thats not absolutely necessary.

if you dont adjust your custom.ini file it only wants to tune between 60-90kPa and 2000-4000RPM. So im sure your 60mph cruise looks great.

you gotta change that ****.

autotune for me works great, none of this: take a log, pull over, analize, reburn, drive and hope it's better.

I've had MUCH better luck with MegaLogViewer's VE table analysis. And I mean MUCH.

how do you make the table show AFR values? mine shows Volts.

I think it depends on your wideband. When you set it up in the configurator, if you have a listed WB it automatically shows AFR instead of volts (it does the conversion for you). But if you're using a different wb, then you have to input the voltage output. In Ben's car he just keeps a spreadsheet that references AFR to volts for his PLX, and it works fine. My car has an LC1 and the table shows AFR.

I would suggest that if you're tuning a certain area, populate the box accordingly. Meaning if boost is good, but you're having an issue at some cruise zone, fill out the chart to focus around that area.

Al, as in you used MLV in some other manner than tune, datalog, and check?

I have a hard time tuning cruise with MLV, but tuning boost is cake.

MS has a built-in "DIY-WB," or "OZ WB" or something, but still shows volts.
