Tuning my 92' 1.6 turbo setup

Ok, so I bought this Miata and the tuning is off. Black soot is coming out of the exhaust and the car is stuttering when the car is in boost. It wasn't doing this during the test drive. I'm not sure how the guy I bought it from tuned it before he gave it to me...but he's not really returning my msg's since I bought it.

Basically, I'm very new to tuning and need assistance. I found this msq from Al:
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t3077-2/#post106342

His setup seems almost identical to mine (1.6L, 450cc injectors, GT2560R turbo). I want to use the msq to flash that he posted in the above link. I want to make sure this is safe. I think it should be ok, since he has a nearly identical setup?? Please let me know if it should be ok to backup my current settings and flash with this msq settings.

Here's what I have in my Miata:

- 1.6L engine
- 3" Enthuza exhaust w/resonator silverline
- 52MM Race Radiator (Godspeed)
- Flying Miata II Turbo Kit GTR2560
- Flying Miata Intercooler
- AM Wideband
- AEM Wideband 02
- Megasquirt Standalone ECU
- RC440 Injectors
- Strut tower brace
- Racing beat rollbar
- Flying Miata ACT clutch
- Lightened flywheel
- 1.8L rear end

Thanks!

i wouldn't flash his msq...too many settings that could be potentially damaging to your motor. you could however copy some of the maps/tables out of his msq and start with them as a base.

is this todd's car?

NEVER load someone's msq and expect your car to run for long.

Thanks for the replies guys... Yep, it's Todd's car. :)

Basically when I test drove it, it was running pretty smooth as far I can remember but he did some tuning after that and now it's running like this. I'm waiting to hear from him if he has his good working msq's so I can just load one of those. I was also thinking of taking it to a local tuner.

Ultimately I need to learn more about tuning and how to tune, but for now I just want the car to run better and I don't want to go muckin with settings until I know what I'm changing.

TDR is probably your best bet if you want it tuned. Any other shop in town is going to talk mad amounts of shit about megasquirt and tell you a bunch of bullshit...seriously, people openly talk shit to your face about it. Just call T1 and ask them, you will "lol". Alamo is good too, but you're not going to find anyone in this state who's jumping up and down to get your car on their dyno.

You will find a bunch of people trying to sell you other engine management or charge $250+ per hour to tune.

before you spend alot of money change your spark plugs and gap them from .025 to .030. then run the car again..

I just seen this post

And just want to make sure there is no confusion about this sell.

To make sure my name is clear....... I have spoken to this gentleman many times and have worked with him for different periods of time via phone calls to help him tune his car. I tried once to meet up with him to help tune the car. But His work schedule didn't work out for that day.

We are on cool terms, and have even talked last night

I know Hustler doesn't like them, but Intercrew actually advises to use the MSPNP for the Miata, and they claim to be fluent in tunning it.

I am a standup guy and do not do shady things.

We are on good terms.

hustler 04-12-2009 10:42 PM

so, wtf are you doing about your tune-drama?

If you're going to use Intercrew, I highly suggest you ask them questions on target AFR and how they are going to tune the thing step by step. I don't know of any horror stories about them, but I require full disclosure before giving someone a car to make or break.
