UGH, no spark!

Ok for some reason Im not getting spark.. I have no clue why.

Both leds light on the MS, I put a volt meter on the 2 wires from the ms to the coils, and they have around 4 volts (dunno what that means).

I mean I herd that left over flux on the bord could absorb moisture, plus the bord has been in and out of the case alot, I doubt it was shocked tho.

Any ideas? It was running yesterday, and today it runs fine with the stock ecu, so the coils are fine I guess.

With the key on, engine off, the spark outputs on MS (pins 31 and 36) should NOT read high, as in 5V. They should be 0 or close to zero. That's how you burn up coil packs, holding the coils high. Did you change some settings or switch MSQ's and then this problem presented itself?

cardriverx 04-22-2008 09:48 PM

sorry, I dident go into enough detail

With IGN on, MS is putting out like .6 volts to the coils. during cranking, its putting out the 4 ish volts.

patsmx5 04-22-2008 09:57 PM

Ok then, go into A LOT of detail! Come on, answer my questions. Did you mess with the MS, or it's settings, or change anything? Tell us what happened. I'm not going to play a game with you. Help yourself. Write a book about everything that lead up to the no spark condition, starting from the last time it worked. Don't forget anything, don't leave anything out. Come on, I mean did you start plucking shit off the board yesterday you thought you didn't need? Did you rewire some shit and now it doesn't run? Again, just tell us everything up front. Don't simply answer a couple of my questions and leave us guessing at what really happened.

cardriverx 04-22-2008 10:04 PM

Ok, yesterday night it ran fine, and this mourning I went to start it and it wouldent even catch. So I checked spark, and there was none.

I have not made any changes.

The car runs fine on the stock ecu, it must be something with the MS.

This is the first time the MShas spent the night in the car, which is why I ask about moisture.

cardriverx 04-23-2008 01:21 PM

Ok well ill try cleaning the bord with the stuff the megamanual suggests...

are there any wires I could check? What voltage should MS be sending to the coils?

Braineack 04-23-2008 01:24 PM

did you fry your ignitor?

yertnamreg1218 04-23-2008 01:32 PM

If he fried the ignitor it shouldn't run on the stock ECU, which he says it does.

If no settings were changed, and no physical modifications were made to the board, it has to be some type of intermittant connection. This is the first thing I would check for. I'm not sure whether you are running boomslang or not but I would check the harness over pretty good. Take an ohm meter to the pins corresponding to the spark output and make sure there is a low resistance (<=1 ohm) path all the way to the ignitor. If there isn't you know that there is something wrong with the wiring. Could be a poor solder job or something of that nature.

Does the MS read the rest of the engine signals ok??
Hope this helps!

cardriverx 04-23-2008 01:41 PM

Ok I did go over the boomslang, I made it very nice.

The only other thing I can think of is that damn db37 connector that you solder on the bord.

OK well the problem I have with that is that for some reason, the MS wouldent fire injectors 2 and 4. When I wiggled the db 37 connector that soldered onto the bord, it would work.

The only way I could get it to work OK is by shoveing a peice of plastic between the bord and the connector. I am getting a new one from diyautotune.

The only thing is that I put a volt meter on the 2 wires for the ignitors on the boomslang, and they were getting like 4 volts under cranking, so it looks like the MS is getting a connection.

tis odd.. it DOES run FINE with the stock ecu

cardriverx 04-23-2008 01:42 PM

and again, it ran fine the day before, so something must have happened to it over night!

cardriverx 04-23-2008 10:17 PM

jeez, no ideas??

patsmx5 04-23-2008 11:19 PM

You say you wiggle something and fixed something.... FIX THAT OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then report back.

You can't measure the voltage on the outputs when MS fires the coils. It spits out a high for .005 seconds. You need an oscilloscope to measure it accurately, or a damn nice expensive meter.

cardriverx 04-24-2008 09:12 AM

chill dude.

That connector was affecting the injectors, not spark.

No, you come here asking questions about your MS not working, then make a vague reference to how you got fuel working by wiggling your DB connector and shoving plastic in it or something. But you just can't figure out why spark's not working.

Braineack 04-24-2008 10:00 AM

resolder everything. The first build I ever did, I had a poor solder joint on the db37 connector on the board. this caused the CLT to go in and out. tap it with some more solder and everything was kosher.

cardriverx 04-24-2008 03:08 PM

ok, I just got some isopropyl alcohol, going to clean the bord. I have a new connector on the way, and ill check every solder joint.

cardriverx 04-24-2008 11:15 PM

hey, cleaning the bord worked! Connector is still being a bitch tho, cant wait to get the new one.
