URGENT - Need to bypass thermoswitch with MSPNP

I am at Willow Springs and my fans are not working. The car boiled over after my last session. I need to know if there is a way to get the fan to come on in the MS software, or if there is a way to do it in the harness. I believe I have melted the wire going to the thermoswitch on the back of the head, and I cannot reach it because the manifold/turbo/DP/heater lines are in the way.

Run a ground straight to the fan plug.

Take the wire off the thermoswitch and ground it. Fans will run all the time when the key is on.

You can ground the black / green wire at 1L to turn on the primary fan relay, the the blue / white wire at 2S to turn on the secondary fan relay.

You can pull the relay out of the socket and insert a jumper to bypass it:

(If you can't see that attachment, I'm pretty sure it's the two terminals spaced furthest apart, and which are in a straight line with one another)

Unplug the fan relay and jumper the terminals with a paper clip or wire with spades.

The thermoswitch doesn't run the cooling fans with the MS unless you've done some modifications for it to do so. I had MS controlling the main fan and the thermoswitch on the a/c fan, but again that was a modification done by me and not stock.

Diagnostics box: GND and TFA

Braineack is the winner.
(I never even noticed that terminal was there.)

any update? Lots of fan problems recently.

I couldn't get back to check this thread, but I really appreciate all the replies, guys. I checked my FSM first thing, and jumped GND and TFA, and nothing came on. I then drove down to Autozone (big radiator + extra hole in bumper = 200 degrees with no fans on the highway) and bought some wire and spade connectors. I grabbed 12v from the diagnostic port, grounded to the a bunch of various stuff, and the fan never came on. Looks like the motor itself died. :bang:

I'll probably do low-pro fans with a custom shroud or something.

I just have to ask- is there something wrong with that? Mine typically indicates 196-199 on the freeway (with a 185° rated thermostat) which is just about right. Are you expecting to run significantly colder than that?

Savington 01-12-2009 01:15 PM

Joe, I was expecting to run hotter. I always thought the fans were necessary to keep the temps where they were. :bang:

If you do, be clever how you build the shroud. Many here have "upgraded" to slim fans and no shroud/custom shroud and immediately had overheating problems. Seeing how you track the car a lot, I would definitely do my research on the matter.

Personally, I bought a set of 12" slim fans to put on mine. After all my research on fans, shroud, and whatnot, I found the best solution for me: stock fans w/built in shroud.

Savington 01-13-2009 06:59 PM

I will probably mimick the shroud setup that FCM sold for a little while. Just a sheet of ABS sealed to the radiator with two holes cut JUST big enough for the fans themselves.
