I have a 9093 MSPNP with unknown history. I'm using a staples usb to serial cable lights built in so you can see when it sends and receives. I have tried all I can think to do. I have moved it around all the com ports and tuner studio recognizes the ports fine. When I test the port it doesn't work in tuner studio no matter what I do. It could be a bunch of things and I'm new to this. Is there any place I can send it to see if the mspnp actually works? For all I know it could be dead. It would be nice to know if the computer works before I go too far.

Have you tried a Port Check test? If so, what were the results? To do this check, you'll need the program portcheck.exe, which comes with most MegaTune versions, including the one on the DIYAutotune.com website. You'll find it in the MegaTune2.25 folder. If you don't have a copy, download it here:

Power up the Megasquirt and connect it to your PC. You do not need to open the case and should not put the boot jumper in place for this test. Close MegaTune if it's running, and run the portcheck.exe program. When this program starts, it will scan the available COM ports.

If the port it's scanning is not connected to a working Megasquirt, or it's on the wrong speed, it'll say "No connection made." If it's on the right port and right speed, it will give you the version of the Megasquirt firmware that's on the Megasquirt. Note that some Megasquirt firmware versions will look like earlier versions with this test - for example, 029V identifies it as 029Q. This is for backwards compatibility.

If you get a port where it replies with "S" or something else that doesn't look like a firmware version, this port is probably a fake COM port that echos back everything that's typed.

Thanks for the tips. I was always wondering about these lights that people were talking about. After a lot of reading I think my MSPNP has been modded for the VTPS. Here is a pic. After I unplugged the TPS, I got it to power up and now 2 red lights appear when I turn the key on....that's somethig new atleast.


So, after a port check utility I took a screen shot. I changed the com ports from 1,2 and 9 and get the same response.

Any idea where to go from here to troubleshoot? I do have a netbook I could install the software on if that would help.

I have no idea....It could have been. This is a bit of a steep learning curve so I apologize for my stupidity. How do I tell if it's been modded TO MS2? It seems to want to connect at the higher ms2 baud rate which I found weird.

Do you have any history on this ECU? Your pic shows that it has had several jumpers changed around since it left here. That jumper from S12 to JS9 will fry a MS1 processor (but is needed on a MS2 processor).

Ok, so just to drive home that I'm special, I have a couple of pics. It does appear to have a MSII daughter board in it.



I have been trying to connect with the 9600 baud rate. I'm wondering if just changing my com settings higher will solve the problem? Thanks for the help guys I have read all the links but putting the initial pieces together is a lot of info to handle. I should have just bought a new MSPNP and been done with it.

Ok, so any idea where I go from here? Right now I can get 2 led's to light up when the ignition is on. The TPS, Ignitor and ST SIG fuse are removed(which means nothing at this point). The only thing I can think to do now is check continuity from the serial end to the board. I'm baffled and frustrated all at the same time.

serial to board looks fine. what comm port is your serial cable given when connected to the pc?

I have used 1,2,9 as all other under 9 are used. I also notice only the 2 outside led's light up when I turn the ignition on. I thought all 3 were supposed to light up? I would not be surprised if this thing is fried.

if it was fried none would come on. outer 2 is normal, middle is typically set to warmup, so itll only light when clt is under 160*F.

Ok, I just tested for continuity from my 9 pin serial all the way back to the board and it came out good. On my usb to serial converter, I shorted pins 2 and 3 and got it to loop back with no problems. When I turn the power off and do a port check, I get nothing on the COM port like I should. When I cycle it on, it says it can't communicate but it's picking up that it is 115200 atleast(as you can see by the screen shot).

I now know I have a MSPNP converted to MS2 atleast. I'm thinking just buying a new MSPNP is in my future.

i'd rather have the ms2 cpu bar-none. if you are talking a new mspnp2 then sure.

id be happy to look at this unit and try to get it to run...

Thanks brain, I might end up taking you up on that.

So, I busted out my netbook and installed port check on it and the staples USB to serial converter. I tried COM1 and then COM9 and nothing. I was defeated until I put it on COM2. I ran the port scan and BOOM! It came up 115200 MS 3.1.1

Here is the kicker though it showed up as COM 9???????? What the HELL dale????

The good news is communication was established...kinda.

Ok, so now I uninstalled the usb to serial converter and the reinstalled it on the laptop. I still get framing errors so after some reading I'm getting that the Compaq doesn't like the staples adapter for some reason. The Acer netbook seems to be kindsa working other than it not being on the port I set it to. I'm going to take a run to the city to see if I can find another style.

Well, I bought another adapter and it was no go. I ended up using the staples adapter and my netbook. No matter what I did, I couldn't get the Compaq to read communicate with the MS. Now I just have to figure out Tuner studio.
