Variable TPS

I needed to install one the other day, so I collected some info on the subject and put it online on my site.

Nice as usual... I even gave you a positive prop... :makeout:

Braineack 05-02-2013 12:02 PM

good info; thanks!

The #2 bmw was pnp (with fun bracketry, pnp wiring wise) on my install. It had to face backwards, towards the firewall to fit and rotate properly, and I believe that the voltage signal was reversed because of this. But it worked ok without switching any wires and such. Mine got some weird noise when it was cold outside, Im not sure what caused that issue.

WestfieldMX5 05-02-2013 03:00 PM

By 'voltage signal was reversed', do you mean that your tps is indicating backwards? 100% with no throttle and vice versa?

Gryff 05-03-2013 10:20 AM

yes.

WestfieldMX5 05-03-2013 12:36 PM

thx, I'll add that the wires need swapping then.
Out of curiousity, how does MS react to a reversed tps, since you didn't swap the wires?

southernmx5 05-03-2013 01:01 PM

Good info! I have been looking for another tps to replace my Wells unit, and the Vishay/Wabash tps in your writeup looks perfect.

Does anyone know a source in the U.S. for the Vishay tps? I have checked the digikey, mouser, and farnell part catalogs.

WestfieldMX5 05-03-2013 01:08 PM

I bought mine from RS components. Don't know if they operate in the US as well though.

Red91 05-03-2013 02:12 PM

I did a 91 tps conversion this week with a tps201. It works but I'm already worried that if I stomp the throttle hard enough a few times it's going to shave that tooth off. I'm gonna try to hunt down the vishay one I think, looks like a better way to go. Thanks for the info, good stuff.

southernmx5 05-05-2013 04:58 PM

RS-components has a U.S. distributor named Allied Electronics. After some searching I found the Vishay/Wabash tps only by the part number 971-0002. It is not listed by either manufacturer name nor with a picture.

Search results for "971-0002" - Allied Electronics

MS threw a short pissy fit iirc, but once it was calibrated it worked fine. Only thing to note, if you disconnect it, you may have fuel cut due to flood clear mode during cranking.

timk 05-06-2013 05:12 AM

I used #1 which was plug and play fit (wiring excepted) and I pulled it from some early-mid nineties 5 series auto.

fill that spot with epoxy?

good luck finding the vishay.

I didn't ever find a vishay w/o ordering from the UK. Yeah I filled in the space with liquid nails. Works fine so far.

southernmx5 05-18-2013 01:57 AM

Check the link I posted above. The Vishay tps part number #971-0002 is available from Allied Electronics which is the U.S. distributor for the R.S. Components (where Frank found it). The part numbers are the same and the price is the same at 60 usd on both websites, but the Allied site lacks a picture of the tps in their catalog.

R.S. Components Vishay tps link: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/precis...633D4E4F4E4526

southernmx5 05-19-2013 01:01 AM

Nevermind. Allied changed the availability of the tps to out of stock since I posted that link.

WestfieldMX5 05-19-2013 06:54 AM

They probably sold a bunch of them in the last couple of weeks :giggle:

WestfieldMX5 06-14-2013 04:28 PM

If anyone has found other vtps that work, please add the info here.

WestfieldMX5 07-21-2013 06:54 AM

Added an adapter plate .stl file for those who have a 3D printer!
I don't have a 3D printer, anyone care to print one out and send it to me ? :wavey:

psiturbo 08-20-2013 08:02 AM

Wouldnt it be th same to use the TPS from a automatic Mazda Protege?

Has identical plug and sensor housing.

Braineack 08-20-2013 09:17 AM

wouldn't what be the same?

mazpr 08-20-2013 09:20 AM

TPS from automatic Mazda Protege LX 1990-94 is variable with almost identical (if I am correct) plugs. Will take some pictures of the one I got, I think the TB can be swapped all together for a almost stock install.

With the auto Pro TPS no need for splicing.

Instead of installing one from a BMW, etc...

I recognise that STL file. Might be nice if you credited me on your website.

Cheers.

I read the comments on MS5Nutz, you must not be afraid. The problem is solved now. Thx for registring on MiataTurbo btw.

Oh I registered a long time ago. I have just not needed to post before.

Thanks for stealing my work so that I had an excuse to post.

You dick.

I told you it was bad manners to rehost my work without a credit.

So you closed your site and said I had bad manners. So you even re-used that!

Have you ever had an original thought in your life?

Zaphod 08-21-2013 05:03 AM

In for BAN.

Dammit - Franks site was a Holy Grail for all the Megasquirt DIY builders.
Yes, Frank has collected some content that was not originating from him, but the value of knowledge in this collection in one place was almost invaluable...

I know Frank for a long time now and I don't think Frank would have had a problem to give you credits on his site - but not if he gets insulted...

I am by no means a short tempered guy - but FU Cerberus.

Just my two cents...

triple88a 08-21-2013 06:01 AM

Anybody got a link to the threads that went on mx5nutz?

It's bloody sad this, Franks site was a brilliant resource for the budding MegaSquirt builder.

Both sides have massively overreacted IMO.

Braineack 08-21-2013 07:31 AM

oh no not your content you posted online for everyone to freely access?!?

he hosted plenty of MY content. Most of the ms3 diagrams and even the basemaps were MINE. And I spent much longer than 3 days creating most my shit.

fuck off.

WestfieldMX5 08-21-2013 07:40 AM

To be honest, I had actually mentioned your name after your fair and correct comment here.
Why on earth would I mind saying 'I got the file from Cerberus' , whoever you may be, it's just another nickname on the internet. I don't even know your name.

But then I say your post count and figured 'where does this come from' and found you and your comment on Nutz.
That comment was in a whole different manner and like Sven said, I do not want to be insulted like that.

I am to old for this type of reactions behind my back.
The site is gone and will stay gone.

WestfieldMX5 08-21-2013 07:41 AM

Seems Scott beat me to it while I was typing my post :)

Damn shame to throw away all that hard work collating all that info and making it presentable over a bit of tit for tat over the internet.

It was a brilliant resource, I really hope you change your mind.

+1

I really hope too - I did come to this site ever so often if I needed any advice on the pinouts of the different years and all the MS wirings...
It would REALLY be a shame to put all this in the thrash-bin...

Braineack 08-21-2013 09:14 AM

I still used to his site as a reference when building my stuff, because it's easier than searching through my own notes/folders.

Harv 08-21-2013 09:56 AM

I just got started on my MS research and the VTPS info was very helpful. Chrissakes can we all stop acting like children?

Hosting the content is a guarantee that it will always be there and available for people in one place. Links go away, files get deleted, shit happens, having a variety of sources for content on the web is a GOOD THING! That your online identity didn't get credit for making some piece of information is a really stupid thing to get pissy over.

That said, it's also stupid to just remove everything. Sorry, but it is, just throw some sort of credit up there for the STL file for the guy and call it a day. Or just remove the STL file! Why delete the whole thing?

Braineack 08-21-2013 10:14 AM

hell, someone took everything I wrote here and made the miataturbo.wikidot.com page and it's been copied through a pleathura of miata sites.

now about 80% of the images are dead because I had hosted them and I lost my web server and have yet to put it all back up.

triple88a 08-21-2013 12:24 PM

Hmm definitely should have given the guy credit for using his work but shit should have never escalated this far in the first place. Stuff like that should have been solved in 2-3 PMs.

Braineack 08-21-2013 12:43 PM

he did. Not initially, but as soon as it was asked for.

thasac 08-21-2013 01:32 PM

god damn ... over a fucking bracket? There's so much 'free' data on this site and others that it's ridiculous when people become proprietary.

Right exactly, after it was added that was suppose to be it, the fucker kept on stalking the guy on a forum after forum.

Harv 08-21-2013 02:59 PM

I downloaded all the cached pages from Google. The only thing missing are the images he hosted through picasa.

Braineack 08-21-2013 03:05 PM

well, looks like it's time to update the miataturbo wiki with ms3 info. i got really tired of maintaining writeups; its just easier for me to accept money to build them instead :)

WestfieldMX5 10-24-2013 05:22 AM

Site is back, but not for everybody to see.

Well that's pointless isn't it?

It's either back or it's not.

Harv 10-24-2013 10:01 AM

I'm not sure what he means since it's all back up from what I can tell.

Oscar 10-24-2013 10:02 AM

Geo-blocked the UK IIRC from his quickly edited post.

richyvrlimited 10-24-2013 04:37 PM

Charming, so we're all tarred with the same brush?

Honestly that's pretty pathetic.

Still, it's also ridiculously easy to circumvent.

Does anybody have the stl file for that bracket? I just want to finish my turbo build

WestfieldMX5 01-21-2016 10:24 AM

yes, here it is.
I wouldn't mind having one sent to Belgium :)

Scott Winters 01-21-2016 11:02 AM

Heck yes. Thank you so much. If you want one in belgium, try getting someone local to make it for you at 3dhubs
I just did a quick search and it looks like people will print it there for a couple euros. Super cheap, super easy.

WestfieldMX5 01-24-2016 07:12 AM

I'm slowly putting back all content on my site after the major crash I had a long time ago (must be 2 years or so).
Anyway, does anyone have a cached copy of my TPS page?
