Vvt 36-2 no start

Hello

I'm trying to get a new motor started. It's an 01 vvt on reverent ms3x. It was running before on the stock 4 trigger crank wheel but I thought I would give the 36-2 a try.

In Ms, I set the ignition mode to Miata 36-2 but it won't start. If I set it to toothed mode, 36-2 @ 80° it starts and runs but won't cam sync due to the Miata cam trigger. All they other settings are the same as the were on the 4 wheel, except input mode.

Is there something else I need to change? Do I need to cut the extra triggers off the cam wheel?

I'm just trying to get the car started and cam to sync so I can get the car sent to a real tuner.

I am kind of surprised that you need 5 degrees of crank offset. Most nb's since there is no adjustable crank angle sensor seem to be anywhere from needing 0 to needing 2 degrees of crank angle offset. Are you positive that you need 5? I would try setting it to 0 and also changing your cranking advance to 12 and try again.

Yeah when I first set it up with locked timing and 4 trigger, that's what it took to get tdc @tdc. I will be checking again with the new trigger wheel.

Something I forgot to mention in the first post is I had a 36-1 wheel that has the second missing tooth cut in. I just pulled the wheel off and comparing it to the fm 36-2 the gap is 90° out. So I'll be ordering a new 36-2 wheel and trying it again

The 36-2 Miata mode needs the exact same pattern/phasing as the FM one, as that's what it was built for. Any generic 36-2 won't work.

Any luck? Having similar issues. Ran great with oem damper and 4 tooth. Tried to "upgrade" and well...it's not been much of an upgrade.

Thanks

Miata 36-2 "works" with the stock miata cam sensor if it is cut exactly like the FM pattern. I know, because that's what I did.

It's still super sketchy and I believe I read somewhere in comments that it's not fully supported or checked like all the other trigger inputs, nor does it appear to ever check for sync again once it sees it. On top of the shitty inputs on the MS3x with it's bullshit trim pots it's a pain in the ass. I was unable to get good sync without setting the pots on the car using a scope. 6 turns CCW or whatever, 2.5 volts at this point etc were not accurate enough. Super-de-duper pain in the fucking ass if you have a NB2 with the ECU in the stock location...

I would knock it down to one tooth if I were to stay with MS3. But I'm not, because it sucks.

I ended up buying the fm 36-2 trigger. There's so much info out there about conflating na and nb setups that don't specifically reference whether they're for na or nb it's maddening.

The missing teeth on the proto wheel iirc was 90 degrees out from the fm nb wheel.

With the 36-2 wheel I only need .2 degree crank angle offset and it picked up sync on the first crank
