wierd startup problem

1 Attachment(s)
ok, first of all, i installed a v2.2 in my friends 1990 miata with a jumper harness i made

my first issue was with the stim for wheel settings, the car will not run if its set to off, so i set it to on, function/output 2 and everything is good

but when at initial startup, the car has a misfire for a moment, while its struggling to idle around 500, and as if someone flipped a switch, the mis goes away and idle jumps to 1200, and everything from there is smoooooth!

is there something im doing wrong?

i tried messing with the AFE settings and so far ive got the mis down to a min, without the car stalling out

i uploaded my 4 recent msq's

Are you running fuel only, or fuel and ignition control? Using Stim for Wheel on a car with ignition control can make a lot of trouble. With fuel only control, it probably won't hurt anything but I would still recommend fixing what's wrong.

It sounds like some of your ASE and warm-up enrichment settings may be a bit off.

i believe this problem is in you afterstart enrichment. set that a little higher and bring your warmup enrichment down a hair. GL

i messed with them alot and i got the car to stop stalling out, but it still has the missing for a few seconds

im using fuel and ignition control

and if i turn off stim for wheel, the car automatically shuts off and it will not start up again

:(

Sounds like you have some very wrong wheel decoder settings for that to happen. Could you post your MSQ file, either here or at msextra.com?

just load up a known good msq like the ms pnp one or mine in the setings sticky, that'll tell you if the problem is in your msq. i can tell that you should be running 1 for a and 2 for b and falling and 24s style decoder from that pic though.

That's how it was done for ages on Miata's Al (as you said)-- then when I got together with James and Ken (the MS Extra coders) at the MS Meet they charted out the wheel and recommended the above instead. It seems to run just the same, but I went with what they recommended here...

are you saying i should change the settings to what al recommended?

could it be the difference between the old natesully/kingof1337 style mods and the new DIY AT style? as in the msq only works with the matching mods? because I remember running 25 style decoder and it ran like crap. like you said the old-style settings have been running great in who knows how many miatas for years now, the only thing that has changed is the DIY AT mod style.

I've run both wheel decoder configs and couldn't tell a difference in how the car ran, I'm sticking with the above as thats what the actual coders worked out as the best solution. I wouldn't think it would differ for a differently built MS but...

so whats the alternative to the 25 style decoder?

Matt Cramer 06-06-2007 02:44 PM

The 024 style - it's slightly different.

slimeball6969 06-10-2007 06:19 PM

well, i tried the 024 without touching the stim for wheel setting

and after i set it, it really hurt my throttle response so i put it back

Aussie Driver 06-10-2007 11:31 PM

I tried the diy wheel decoder settings this weekend and I'd say that they were an improvement over the 'old' settings. I used to get a tach spike at 2000 rpm which now seems to have gone. I'll be sticking with the diy wheel decoder settings from now on.

slimeball6969 06-11-2007 05:39 PM

thats cool, but still leaves me with the wierd startup problem

hey aussie, can you post up your msq for reference?

thanks

Send me a pm and I'll email you a copy of my .msq tonight (Down Under time).

slimeball6969 07-11-2007 10:05 PM

still having that problem, i think its ignition dependant

slimeball6969 07-23-2007 08:07 PM

the car will not run unless STIM FOR WHEEL 2 is on
