Won't Start

I have the brain MS in my 97 with a homebrew turbo setup. I have the maf removal kit, aem analog wb and the gigaware radioshack usb-serial cable. The problem is I can't get the car turned over. Here's what I've done as of yet:

-Tried megatune via Brain's writeup but kept getting error messages when trying to connect

-Tried Tunerstudio. I copied the therm files over from megatune and did the "guide" for tunerstudio with also using brain's ini files from his site.

The car cranks and that's it. Tunerstudio won't connect what so ever. I've set the port to number one, the usb is on number one, and the software is all loaded up and says it's running fine under the device manager section. So yeah...this is where I'm stuck. I just have this feeling like I've done something wrong or out of order.

Braineack 01-01-2010 05:16 PM

The error in MT is because you were able to D/L those two files and activate the HR_10g firmware. I double checked, if you right click and do save as, let it save as a text file, but it will download correctly. get that into the megatune/mtcfg folder, then activate the firmware in configurator.

Also, I'm looking at your sig which says 460cc, but the map I loaded was for 315cc injectors, it's probably flooding because I have it setup for smaller injectors...even if you cannot connect, it should be able to run the car once configured correctly for the correct injectors.

not sure why TS wont connect, I'd work at trying to get it to, reset your computer and try only with TS. make sure you select com 1 and 9600 baud rate.

Turbo_4 01-01-2010 09:41 PM

Well, I'm actually still on the 315's...the 460's are in a box waiting to go in. When I right click the link I don't have a save as option. If I open the link and then right click the page I can save it a text...which is what I did. I saved both files in the Megatune2.25/ctfg file. When downloading mspnp-extra.ini file it actually has me replace it...I guess there already was a mspnp-extra.ini file in the folder?

The big thing I'm confused about is you keep saying only use the 90-93 without maf folder when I have a 97. Why wouldn't I just use the 96-96 without maf folder?

Turbo_4 01-02-2010 02:09 PM

Okay so I redid everything and now tunerstudio connects to the ms. I uploaded the map from the ms but now the car still just cranks? Is there something else I'm supposed to change before trying to start it up or after the two communicate that's it?

I just messed with it a little bit more and it appears TS is reading the wideband because they both indicate the same a/f. Also, I noticed the duty cycle doesn't change what so ever. Is there anyway someone can look at my file and tell me if something doesn't look right? It's a 97 with homegrown turbo and supra green tops, stock ignition.

Turbo_4 01-02-2010 07:06 PM

Just noticed my required fuel said I had a 350 v8 with 40lb injectors...I changed it to my current setup and that lowered my required fuel from 11.1 to 9.9, not sure if that matters but it is something to change.

Turbo_4 01-03-2010 01:05 PM

So I fixed all the wronged settings, and lowered some of the cranking pulse widths like the manual said and it cranks harder but still nothing. After pulling the plugs there isn't even a drop of fuel on them. My pulse width is saying around 4-5 and my duty cycle is 0-.5 ish which I'm pretty sure is supposed to be a lot higher right? Also my tps is going crazy...it goes, slowly, all the way to 2600, I can't even set the tps settings.

I got your PM, but let me cover one thing here. From that picture, it's clear that the MS realizes that the engine is cranking. Your spark advance drops to 11.8, the "Crank:Y" indicator is lit up in red, and most importantly, injector pulsewidth goes right to 4.8ms when you're turning over, which I'm assuming is what you've got in the CrankPW table. (This is a bit too low for 315cc injectors, IMO, but it's close enough that something should be happening.)

Try reversing your ignition wires. This is probably the most common first-time mistake on new MSs, and one that I've made a time or three myself. It's possible that you may have the 1/4 and 2/3 ignition triggers reversed. If you don't want to meddle with the harness wiring, you can just swap the spark plug leads around at the coils. Pull off the leads for the 1 & 4 plugs and put them on the coil terminals where the 2 & 3 leads are currently. Likewise, move the 2 & 3 leads to the terminals on the coil where the 1 & 4 leads are now. Then try cranking again.

If that doesn't do it, then something is wrong at a deeper level than just software. The MS clearly believes that it's doing the right thing. It's commanding fuel and ignition events to occur, and apparently they're not happening. Could be wiring, could be hardware inside the MS, could be something wrong with the car. But I'm pretty confidant that it's not software.

Actually, this may be something blindingly simple like your fuel pump not running. Before you swap the plug wires around, try forcing the fuel pump on by putting a jumper wire between "F/P" and "GND" inside the diagnostic connector which is under the hood on (or near) the drivers' side shock tower, as per this illustration. You should be able to hear fuel running through the rail when the pump is on.

Oh, and the link you gave me (http://boostedmiata.com/MS/msq/firmw...extra.ini.hr10) isn't an MSQ, it takes me to a copy of your msns-extra.ini file.

Turbo_4 01-03-2010 11:42 PM

Well I guess I'm confused a little. When starting a new project in Tunerstudio, I go to the other section since it won't detect...what file am I supposed to load up? One of those base msq's or one of those ini's in that link? I can't seem to find any definitive answers for using tuner studio instead of megatune...

Joe Perez 01-03-2010 11:51 PM

Don't waste your time fiddling with TunerStudio right now. The MS appears to be configured correctly- focus your efforts on doing the diagnostic steps I outlined.

Turbo_4 01-04-2010 12:21 AM

Well, I actually just wiped everything and am trying to start fresh. I downloaded the Diyautotune package from their site and am trying to start fresh. Now all I need to do is load a clean msq and plug in my basic settings. I'll try the fuel pump and/or wire reversal tomorrow first thing.

Turbo_4 01-04-2010 12:52 AM

How exactly do a burn a fresh map to the ecu?

Braineack 01-04-2010 10:49 AM

in MT you simply go to file 'open'. in TS you go to 'open tune'.

please try this map I've attached. I tweaked it a little for you.

before you try cranking, do this:
  • Key in the on position, car should not be running.
  • Connect to your MS with MT or TS, from the Tools menu, choose 'Calibrate TPS'.
  • With your foot OFF the throttle, click 'GET CURRENT' for the Closed Throttle ADC Count
  • Floor it and hold it there. Click 'GET CURRENT' for the Full Throttle ADC Count

Also, do all the gauges look like they are reading correctly? from the log it looks like you have all the inputs are good, so I'm pretty sure we just need to tweak it a little for the fueling during cranking.

And what are the RL coils, this might be a factor as well?

Turbo_4 01-04-2010 11:25 AM

I've tried to calibrate the tps but the tps goes nuts whenever I put the key to the 2nd position...meaning...it starts out really low and normal but slowly rises up to like 2600%. Also, whenever I do my initial throttle setting, there is no difference from the full throttle.

Also, the rl coils are my coilovers not ignition system.

Also, just to make sure my wb is hooked up right, I hooked the white wire from the wb to the pink wire on the harness....the grey wire and two black wires go to the ecu ground by the throttle body...

Braineack 01-04-2010 11:54 AM

hrmm, the TPS thing is weird...it's possible I mistakenly put the input on the wrong spot on the harness I built. Keep it unplugged for now and lets verify it's spot on the harness it should be the blue one on the middle connector, 3rd spot on the left. It could be enabled flood clear mode.

WB hookup sounds correct.

Turbo_4 01-04-2010 02:06 PM

I just checked it and it appears that the blue wire on the ecu side has come undone. Does it go on the top row next to the yellow wire or the bottom row where they are pretty much no wires?

Braineack 01-04-2010 02:07 PM

dammit!

bottom row, and one away from the yellow.

Turbo_4 01-04-2010 02:10 PM

So I will try to redo that wire and I'll put the key to the 2nd position and open this map and it will automatically use my loaded map in the ecu, there's no burning process? Also, what's this about unplugging the coilpack when changing firmware?

Braineack 01-04-2010 02:12 PM

yeah, power the MS and go open this map...give it a few seconds to burn...wait for the gauges to start reading correctly again. Then you should be able to try to crank it again.

you don't have to worry about coilpacks until you need to flash new firmware, which you don't need to
