Woot! running MegaTunix on my eeePC

I finally gotten megatunix working on my Asus eeePC running Xandros Linux. It was a bitch, mostly because I'm somewhat a Linux n00b, and I had to learn how to add a bunch of crap to compile the code that the eeePC did not come with... I was also conacerned about using a serial-USB converter on linux, but the OS recognized the adapter immediately and Megatunix automagically found the virtual serial port all on its own.

I have not heard of anyone trying this on an eeePC with a stock OS (a few using Ubuntu), so I thought I'd post it. A couple screen shots for your enjoyment... the gauges are pretty sweet.

That is f'n bad ass! At some point I'll get on to MS (not now, too many projects going). Is this on the smaller screen Eee ($299) or the new larger screen one?

Stealth97 07-17-2008 05:45 PM

this is on the eeePC 701 4G, with the 7" screen.

How do you like that 7" screen. I have been eye ballin those but im affraid it might be too small.

Its not bad really, I actually use it as my primary machine, but If the 901 with the larger screen was available when I bought this one, I would have gotten it instead since it is only slightly physically larger ( a few mm iirc) but I have no regrets. For $300 this has been an excellent machine.

i got a 2g surf. any tips for installing megatunix? i'm a linux noob too lol

Stealth97 07-24-2008 02:17 PM

Go to eeeuser.com, and install all of the debian repositories listed there. Then, follow the instrutions listed here. http://www.msextra.com/viewtopic.php?p=151941
The instructions are for Ubuntu, which is a fork of Debian like the eeepc's stock Xandros, so these instructions will get you going. Just ignore the part about installing virtualbox and ubuntu.

I guess I should have really paid attention and done a eee-specific writeup. see here also http://megatunix.sourceforge.net/

i may just put windows on it so i can get different files from other people

Stealth97 07-24-2008 02:39 PM

its worth it just for the gauges, imo

That's really sweet!

I'am having real trouble compiling this for the EEE 900, couldn't you share the binaries? :)

Stealth97 08-14-2008 10:32 AM

Honestly I'm not to sure how to do that. I'd be happy to help where I can, though. Did you install the nessesary componets to compile it?

doggy 08-14-2008 10:51 AM

Nah, can't compile GTK dev libs :(

If you zip or gzip the whole application folder i think it would be doable :)

wes65 08-14-2008 11:10 AM

Yeah, the eeepc is great. I put xp on my 2gb and i LOVE it. It is so easy to tune compared to the 17" i had before.

giryan 08-17-2008 05:12 PM

Cool! :D
I have an EEE aleady and will soon have the MS installed so this is nice to see :)

Will XP or vista run well on the cheaper eeePC?

and stealth, how do you like the tunix over the megatune? the thing i hate most about megatune is the lousy pull-down menus for every single function. this is understandable as the software grew along with MS whereas tunix is more recent.

Yes, XP or vista would run on the cheaper ones. I personally would not want to use either though, my EEE running linux, at a mere 600mhz clock speed is faster than my dual core pentium laptop, for real.

in itself, I prefer megatunix, but feel more comfortable with megatune, if that makes any sense at all. since everyone else has megatune, you really have to keep it around anyway in case you share info. I have not been able to get the internal datalog viewer to work though. I have been told megalogviewer works in linux but have not tried it.

If anyone does this, I would definitely reccomend the 9xx series over the 7xx though, it would be a lot easier to see from the drivers seat, and the laptop is only a few mm bigger. The screen washes out in the sunlight though, which has me tempted to get another one of these: http://store.mp3car.com/Xenarc_700TS..._p/mon-004.htm
