Can WI increase the HP potential of a turbo?
I have been searching around but not found much, maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing. So, this may be a dumb question but here goes.
I have the gt2860rs. I want to make 400whp. Now, This is certainly a lofty goal and I may never make it but I am sure as hell going to try. When i pop the stock motor, I have another one sitting in my closet that is itching for some forged internals. That being said, the gt2860rs can flow 35lb/min of air (give or take.) This is not quite enough for 400whp. I am willing to change turbos but I want to stay with my current manifold. That means the biggest turbo I can get is the gt2876rs. Now, this bad boy can flow around 49lb/min of air. That is just enough for 400 crank HP. Still not quite enough and it is way out of its efficiency range. With the help of very aggressive water/meth injection and very aggressive timing, is it feasible that one could make 400whp on a gt2876rs or possibly even my current disco potato? Now, I would like to keep this from turning into a debate about whether I'm going to be able to make 400whp on the stock motor. Thanks in advance, Wes |
I've been reading up on WI. It's amazing shit. Here's a few awesome links in case you want to read for days. And days.

Yeah, I know what you mean and I agree. It's not how much money you have to throw at your car, it's what you can do and how well you can do it that makes it mine.
Oh yeah, you should get an IC like mine if you're going for big power. :) |

Its not exactly as cutting edge as alot of people make it out to be. Just don't let the tank go dry. (Didn't notice but his first link as the same thing in it.) |
Why not just do a GT3071R? They come in the T2 flange format.
Personally that would be my route. I'm not a huge fan of maxing out the turbo like that, as you just increase IATs as the turbos go from hair dryer to heat gun. |

I have seen dyno sheets of over 450 whp for the GT30 with T2 housing....pretty nuts!
Water/meth is the way for big power on pump or to have a nice bif safety net when you are only leaning against the envelope...but not quite pushing it. |
wess WI can and will up your capacity by improving VE etc but u have your work cut out for you running the maxx of the turbo isnt a very nice thing to do. the gt30 sounds like the way for you to go and the WI as well as always im in the area man if u need help holler at me.

lol urs is fast becomeing just like mine fast and nice :D

Along the lines of the thread topic:
My turbo is very limited...it's an old IHI. It won't efficiently push more than 10psi, and even at that, it's known to fall on it's face above 5500rpm. Can I tailor a WI setup to fill in the gap at higher rpms, basically making it feel like the turbo pulls all the way to redline? |
nah ultimatlya ir flow is air flow but it will make the rest of the power band feel better provided u tuned for it. WI is not nitrous newb :P It is not a power adder it is a power stabilizer in a way.
|
That's what I was afraid of.
I started another thread just for my planning, and what I hope to do is table switching like Joe. I want to have a normal conservative tune, and then aggressive timing when there's pressure in the line. I was hoping this would put a few more ponies up top, just to keep it pulling. My last toy was a Daytona 955i, which had a torque curve you could set dinner on. I really miss that. Then again I may wait and see, I got this turbo because I normally drive between 3K-6K rpm, maybe it will suit my needs fine, and WI will just be a safety cushion. |
tune your timming right man conservative timing is for wussys with FMIC's
|
So:
1. Do WI 2. Turn timing up to 11. 3. Don't be a wuss. Got it. |
Gospeed, get to a dyno and tune spark in the upper rev ranges. I was able to add 8-10 degrees and it's scary how hard my tiny little turbo pulls up top now.

oohh I cant wait to get my WI on.
Did you just decide to go with a kit instead of DIY? |
