Just Curious.......Tolulene injection

Water is only injected while the engine is in boost...right?

People add tolulene or other octane boosters to their gas to get knock suppression and higher octane that is required to run high boost/power...right?

How efficient would pure tolulene injection be in a miata versus water or methanol injection?

Could be a very stupid idea but it occured to me today and i was curious of the results.

noone's got any input on this...either way?

nobody has any input on this? are you kidding?

I am not versed enough in WI to make an appropriate comment.

I don't think it would be worth while. Water pulls a ton of heat out of the combustion chamber and slows the burn just like very high octane fuel. The only benefit from the toulene is that it is actually higher octane. It would be just like richening up the mixture a bunch with a higher octane fuel. Not really beneficial.

Why? Staged injection is proven for reducing charge temp and providing additional fuel. Water injection is effective because heat in the intake charge evaporates the liquid, which removes heat from the air. Is the specific heat/latent heat of vaporization of toluene so high that it wouldn't evaporate?

If you need the extra fuel, why not tune in more fuel? If you want the high octane benefit you could run a dual fuel setup. Its just a different concept than WI. The water is not going to combust. If thats the route you are gonna go it sounds like E85 is the happy medium.

Toluene has a higher evaporation point (iirc) than a lot of the other aromatics in regular gas as well as a higher octane level (112/114 I think) so no, it would not evaporate and remove heat like the water would and yes it would add octane (knock control) to the mixture, so probably not a good idea.

I, personally, am not doing WI just for cooling. I am doing it so I can lean out my mixture. Lean=power but sometimes lean=blown engine. If you use WI you can lean your mixture without the side effect of knock. Injecting Toluene would raise your octane (preventing knock) but would also richen your mixture. I'm pretty sure you would lose power.
