2.5 gallon tank mounted in the trunk. I rigged up some ghetto-ass eyebolts and cable and hated how it came out, so now I'm back to square one.

Who among you has a trunk-mounted water tank and how did you mount it? I am thinking maybe just ratchet straps and eyebolts in the floor?

magnamx-5 06-16-2009 04:30 AM

i glued my gallon to a peice of wood and bolted the shit down and the 1/2 gallon other tank i have in line is bolted to the back of the trunk. I would get some steal bands bend em up drill holes and viola done.

+1 on that,Use Aluminum instead.

Joe Perez 06-16-2009 08:49 AM

Not a 2.5 gal, but:

The tank has mounting tabs, which made it easier. The black material bolted to the trunk floor is plywood. Two T-nuts are installed into the underside of it for the tank retaining bolts to screw into.

So, Joe. You've removed your jack - or at least made it impossible to get out - and you still have the jack handle in there? WTF?

The jack sits on the floor behind the driver's seat. I saw no reason to relocate the jack handle.

Shit breaks, tires go flat.. My insurance reimburses for local tows, however its still out of pocket expense. They won't reimburse me for a tow in the middle of nowhere to my house, however. Better safe than sorry.

hustler 06-17-2009 12:12 PM

do you hear that Precious? Its going to get the hose.

elesjuan 06-17-2009 12:48 PM

oh noooes!!1

Joe Perez 06-17-2009 01:07 PM

Hehehe.

I think the jack that came with my car weighs ~5 lbs, and it tucks in neatly in that little space on the floor behind the driver's seat. I have a fire extinguisher in the space behind the pax seat. In the trunk, I keep a gym bag containing a 12v tire inflater, a tire plugging kit (the kind with a gun that shoots mushroom plugs), a spare quart of oil and a small funnel, leather gloves, pressure gauge, windex, a roll of paper towels, etc. A set of heavy jumper cables tuck up into the tunnel forward of where the spare tire used to be. And yes, I still have room for groceries.

AAA FTW 60 mile tow radius And the spare jack etc all adds up to a good chunk of wieght.

Why squabble about a few pounds of weight on a street car? Just turn up the power. :jerkit:

cueball1 06-17-2009 02:50 PM

I've wondered why someone hasn't found a tank that will drop down into the jack opening in the trunk that Joe's sits on top of. Should be some kind of durable tank out there that will fit that opening. A 1 gallon tank could be hidden completely there. A 2 to 2.5 gallon would sit up like Joe's does but with 1/2 of it in that well. Just thinking about keeping the center of gravity low.

Stock jack: 5 lbs
Set of jumper cables: 3 lbs
Not being stuck by the side of the road waiting for a Real Man to show up so you can confirm all of his pre-conceptions about Miata drivers and then find out several months later that he's been giving your wife the "special attention" you never could: priceless.

There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's boost.

Milton Tucker 06-17-2009 03:53 PM

I mounted my 2.5 gallon tank in the center of the trunk using “I” bolts on each side of the tank, and a small ratchet strap to secure it.

ThePass 06-17-2009 04:39 PM

Is the 4 qt (1 gallon) tank just not big enough for track use? Mounting that would be far easier.

Savington 06-17-2009 04:43 PM

3gph nozzle, in boost 75% of the time, means a 1 gallon tank is empty in 30 minutes.

So nobody here has a clean mounting solution?

I made up a bracket for mine, but it wasn't strong enough when the tanks full, so i just used some ratchet straps.

I had an install thread. It should still be here somewhere. I basically got some angle bar at the Lowes spare metal section. The kind with slots cut in it. I cut 2 foot long sections and used self tapping screws to hold them down to the car. I mounted it on the right side of the spare tire well. Beside the battery. I put them parallel, front to back of the car, with the space btw them being the width of my tank. I then used 2 huge worm clamps on either end of the tank and tightened it down with a drill. It wouldn't budge a mm. Super secure. The only thing I could see that you specifically should look into is a tank with baffles.

I do not know how to embed youtube videos so a moderator will have to edit this for me. Oh look one did.

kaisersoze 06-17-2009 11:50 PM

I am not sure this will fit width wide as I cant find the dimensions but I think you could find a way to mount this. The spec C tank is popular with STI owners running meth

cause i cant run any more boost on my turbo without being out of the effeciency and, why not fuck it i can walk call a tow truck and be done with it or i will push the car or just do what i gotta do. Don't have a wife joe so that wont be happening. If your car isn't as bad ass as it can be then what is the point in driving it. Watered down supercars are for pussys, i want the ability to do 0-100 fast 100-0 fast and smoke anything in sight. Dont be such a newb man risk is inherent to greatness.

magnamx-5 06-18-2009 12:07 AM

what are your dimensions savington? There is alot of room behind the battery going to the passenger compartment. or if it is shallow enough put it into the indention of the stock trun for a semi flat laod floor.

deliverator 06-18-2009 12:26 PM

Savington 06-19-2009 11:39 PM

Dimensions are 7 3/4" x 12 3/4" x 7 3/4".

2.5 Gallon Tank DevilsOwn Injection

My fitting is located on the slanted section near the bottom of the tank, with that fitting aimed at the back of the car (figured I'd be under acceleration when the water is on so I want the water sloshing towards it).

neogenesis2004 06-19-2009 11:41 PM

Exact same tank i had.... too bad the pics on my old post are dead and i don't have them anymore.

magnamx-5 06-20-2009 12:22 AM

mount it where the spare tire is ala neon the same way i did with my 1 gall. FWIW i cant believe you spent 50 bucks on a friggin tank does it rain cash in california?

2.5 Gallon Tank DevilsOwn Injection...

For others who may be considering this tank, it is available from US Plastic for under $25. Cap sold separately, make sure you add one to the cart. Credit goes to Y8S for this info. For your convenience their full selection of small multi-purpose tanks and caps can be found here

For mounting I purchased a tie down/eye-bolt set from Harbor Freight on sale for $8. Sorry, no pics. I haven't installed my tank yet, but the mounting position will be similar to Joe's

I paid $35 shipped from US Plastics. Same exact tank, though.

It's not a great picture, but this is the set-up that FM did for me. Tank is about 2 liters and sits just to the right of the jack storage area (jack is long gone and a compressor/inflatant kit has taken its place).

It's not ideal as I can't run it too low without the fluid sloshing away from the pick-up under acceleration, but the Hydramist mapping only uses the right amount of methanol mix that's needed, so a tank lasts quite a while, even when lapping.

Where did the mount your nozzle(s)?

Faeflora 06-30-2009 09:33 AM

Also which nozzles did you/FM use? I'd really like to know as I have the exact same setup minus the stroker.

usd2bfst 06-30-2009 03:43 PM

Used the larger 2 of the 3 that come with the Hydramist. Mounted them at the IC outlet.

So before the air temp sensor and the BOV?

cueball1 06-30-2009 04:50 PM

What if you did a taller thin tank just behind a passenger seat next to the center console? (if you even have a passenger seat in your track beast) You could use something like this 6 quart one. Just use self tapping sheet metal screws or you could bolt it into place. You could hide the pump in the truck and run supply lines through to it. This could keep the weight lower and more centered in the car if that's a concern.

Yes.

50/50 water methanol is flammable, and burns with a clear flame.

So mounting pre-BOV that is VTA would be a bad idea then? ;)

Any issue with the Link temp sensor and water/meth injection?

usd2bfst 07-02-2009 11:20 AM

I have a guy coming back this fall (for more HP) who has had an Aquamist on his Link FM2 system for the last 5 years or so. I'll have a good idea when I get into it.

I'd run distilled water to hedge your bets.

I know this is an older thread, but I came across it while searching for information on how to mount my tank. So I thought I would add my installation. It's a 2.5 gallon Devil's Own reservoir and the pump is mounted under the carpet. I used some 1" metal bands to secure it. Held it nice and solid, but I didn't care for the unfinished look. Cut up a rubber seal meant for a garage door to cover the metal bands giving it a better look. Any thoughts?

SKMetalworks 08-09-2009 09:28 PM

That tank looks familiar...

Looks better than my trunk. Have you plumbed the wires/hose yet?

ZX-Tex 08-09-2009 11:29 PM

Will it fit between the Beatrush bar and the upper lip in front of the trunk lid? If so, I would be tempted to mount it to the top of the bar, and redo the carpet to cover it all up. The bar looks pretty beefy. Or, get a flatter, wider tank and mount it underneath the bar.

Plumbed the hose inside a fuel line and ran the entire thing under the car. I will finish it up tomorrow if I don't get hung up on anything.

It wouldn't fit in there because it was just a little too deep. There's actually about 3 inches of the tank that is below the carpet. I wish there was an actual tank that had identical dimensions to a spare tire. I wonder how hard it would be to make one?

I have considered that. IMO, if you bought some 3 or 4" PVC pipe and some 45 deg couplings, you could build a toroid (octagonal) that would fit nicely in the spare space, and have decent volume. Quick and easy. Fill it with some open-cell foam to prevent slosh, and/or use an intermediate tank like Joe Perez' sweet dual tank setup.

The harder route would be to mold a fiberglass tank to fit the well. Or hell, I wonder if tire rubber is water/meth compatible. Take a 'spare', add fittings, and viola. Well, maybe not, the wheel would probably be attacked by the methanol.

rrjwilson 08-10-2009 04:28 AM

Mounting the tank isn't actually my concern it is the routing of the feed.
