What year is the 1.8L motor out of? Is it in good working order?
|
Hey Denise, welcome to the forum. Why are you looking to swap your motor so soon?
|
It's a saaaadddd story... We bought the car in November and after quite a bit of work, have the car all set up for autocross. We've been lovingly tweaking it all season, getting it "just right". it's taken FTD indexed five times in a row now, and after a great event Saturday having three of our drivers go 1, 2, 3 for small bore points and me not too far behind them, we broke down on the way home. The belts blew off the car, the car immediately overheated, I immediately shut the car down leaving us stranded on the side of the DC Beltway for about 2 hours nearing dusk waiting on a tow truck (another long story that I'll spare you). The belt loss turned out to be a symptom not a cause. Bottom line, the water pump and timing belt were replaced about 5000 miles ago by a former owner (not the person I bought the car from). When they guy did the work, he failed to properly torque the harmonic balancer which then proceeded to work its way loose and mayhem ensued. One busted crank later, and here we are dropping a new motor in. I picked the above motor up from Todd today and assuming no issues, I will have my car back and running on Friday with a shiny new-to-me - fingers crossed!
Moral to this story, when you buy a new-to-you car and the valve cover is leaking, and you discover that three of the bolts aren't even finger tight and one is sheared off and the you find out the slouch added a 1.6L style radiator to your 1.8L car (a third long story), consider double checking the REST of the work the previous repair person did as well, cause most likely, that's not the only thing they didn't bother to tighten! Thankfully, it's a Miata and the parts and labor are relatively inexpensive. At least this isn't my Corvette sitting with a blown engine. Now, everyone go home and double check the torque on your harmonic balancer so you too do not suffer the way we have. This was a preventable motor death... |
The new motor is safely tucked away under the hood of my little black Miata. We're all ready for next weekend's autocross with a little bit more HP, more torque and less noise! Can't wait to give her a spin on the course next week! Thanks Todd.

Price shipped to 21207 for..
front turn signals. (I really only need the passenger signal.) third brake light wire harness (the part that screws into the back of the light) clockspring (the device behind the steering wheel that allows the horn and airbag to work) one headlight bulb gauge cluster shroud |
never mind on the gauge cluster shroud unless it will fit a 94

Glad to hear that you got the motor swapped in. (at record speed i might add) Sorry i wont be there to join you at this next event. I hope the new found power makes your race toy even more incredible! I may be beating you on raw times, but your car always spanks me on index.
