neogenesis2004 05-05-2007 04:07 PM

haha, i'd need to get a new one :-o

Ben 05-05-2007 04:39 PM

Too bad it's in Ontario. :-(
I asked the seller for a shipping estimate though. We'll see.

krayzrac3r 05-05-2007 05:42 PM

i dont get whats soo special about a 6 speed. All ive heard about them is that you have to shift more than the 5 speed and on the highway your revs are higher. Is there something I'm missing here?

Ben 05-05-2007 05:45 PM

Yeah, they don't break.

miataspeed1point6 05-05-2007 08:13 PM

How strong is a typical 1.6 5 speed trans? Is it common to break one with 200hp?

Braineack 05-05-2007 09:05 PM

not before the rear.

kotomile 05-06-2007 03:46 AM

I think the 5 speed will handle what, 270ish before you have to worry about it?

m2cupcar 05-06-2007 12:14 PM

I think a lot of it depends on how you drive and what you're doing. Drag racing will kill it at 250ftlbs, but I've got a buddy who tracked his 300rwhp Miata for five years on the same trans and it's still going.

miataspeed1point6 05-06-2007 06:47 PM

Ok good. I'm just tired of buying upgrades just to get my car ready for higher boost. The only weak part left on my car is the clutch. I need a clutch and fuel pump and I'm DONE.

Ben 05-06-2007 07:29 PM

Go for it, you probably won't find one closer.
The seller wants $200 to ship it to me :sadwavey:

I would have thought the opposite is true. My Miata sits at about 4k rpms at 80mph, twice now I've gone searching for that 6th gear only to remember there wasn't one and it has to go back to fifth. But I guess the 6-speeds could be geared in such a way that 6th isn't much higher than the 5th we have now. Is this true?

Ben 05-06-2007 11:05 PM

6 spd cars came with a 3.9 ratio rear, some crazy overseas models were 3.636. Your 92 has a 4.3 ratio rear. (then 4.1 in the 1.8 NA, and back to 4.3 for the 5 spd NB) You'd want to source a numerically lower gear if you got a 6 speed. It's really not that hard, you can find what you need out of a number of mazda trucks and rx7s. Someone has a cool list of other mazda gears compatible with the 7" miata diff, maybe they'll post it up.

The 6th gear in a 6 spd is shorter than the 5th gear in a standard 5 spd. The 6spd is a stronger transmission and was mated with a 3.9 rearend(correct?). If i was to swap in a 6 spd I would do some research and have a taller 6th gear installed to get some gasmileage and top end out of it other wise the only benefit is strength over the 5 spd.

jwarriner 05-06-2007 11:09 PM

Yeah, I was planning on getting a higher rear as well. Good to know on the 6speed, thanks for spoon feeding my non-searching lazy ass. :)

fmowry 05-08-2007 07:10 AM

Is anyone actually looking for a 4.3 Torsen out of a 5 spd NB? I'd gladly drop to a 3.9 or better yet a 3.63 Torsen for a swap.

Frank

Ben 05-08-2007 08:02 AM

Sure, 4.3 would probably be a great gear for track duty. But if I were looking, I would probably go 4.10 with the rx7 5th gear.

m2cupcar 05-08-2007 08:58 AM

here's your 3.9. That's about half the price of a new 3.63 from mazdaspeed. I'd still spend double for the 3.6 though. It may slow the accleration, but not enough to notice (only on the timeslip) and the lowered cruise rpm would be worth it IMO.

Braineack 05-08-2007 09:20 AM

better yet, call 915racing.com in TX and I bet you can source a 84-85 GSL 3.909 cheaper.

or try the:

3.700 - 808/72-75 RX-3
3.636 - RWD 626
3.727 - 76+ RX-3
3.308 - 82-84 B2000/Courier Diesel

here these guys: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda...2328QQtcZphoto

just call them, they can get the 3.909

Ben 05-08-2007 09:23 AM

is that where you got the one that you sold to yates?

partsgroup 05-09-2007 10:52 AM

kags1969 05-09-2007 11:00 AM

I'm currently running a 5-speed and 3.636 gears in my 2000. I really like that gearset. If you do the math on the custom FM gears, my first gear w/ the stock 5 speed is very close to their tall 1st gear w/ stock 4.30's. All that to say I like my setup. Now if I can just fix the speedo.....
