Dog Gearsets - Any interest?

Hi all,

The 6 speed in my race car is showing signs of distress, so I am tossing up the possibility of a dog gearset.

I have had a long discussion with a local engineering firm here in Australia who specialise in dog gearsets for racing applications. They are well known and supply gearsets to racing teams around the world. They have offered me a discount if I can drum up some interest in multiple gearsets.

They can supply a non-overdrive dog gearset for installation in a 5 speed case. 5th gear becomes a 1:1 gear (no overdrive), but aside from that, you will have your choice of ratios. 1st gear will remain synchromesh, which may not appeal to the autocrossers out there - but you guys can always choose shorter ratios for 2nd and 3rd to compensate.

They claim trouble free operation to 400whp for straight cut gears, which may not be enough for all of you out there, but it is what it is - and having seen their work, I suspect this may be a conservative claim. The gears are something to behold and are all individually hand made from bar stock. I doubt anyone can make anything stronger that will fit in a Miata transmission case. What's more, the straight cut gears will significantly reduce torque loading on the transmission case - so I believe these gears will hold *a lot* more than a 6 speed, as several of the primary weaknesses of that box (case flex, weak gears, etc) are addressed by this box in straight cut form. You also get quick, clutch less shifting.

A helical option is available if you don't want the whine of a straight cut box - but it won't be as strong.

The gearsets include all gears, dogs, and a brand new lay shaft made from billet. They also include billet shift forks - basically everything to drop into a 5 speed case, except bearings and seals. You will need to arrange a 5 speed main shaft, as this shaft is reused and needs to be machined to suit the application. Yes - you will have to post the shaft to Australia. Yes, this is a shit so factor this in to the price.

Indicative pricing for manufacture of the gearset is around $4500USD plus shipping to you, which may be a cpl of hundred more. This is a saving of around $2k over RRP. I need three boxes (including mine) to get the discount.

This is NOT a group buy. If you're interested, I can arrange the order, but you will pay them directly and they will send the gearset to you directly. I'm not going to do any handling of $$.

If you are genuinely interested, send me a PM. Given they have a dealer network, I can't say who they are on the forum - but their name has been mentioned here before and they are well known. Obviously, if you were interested, I'd refer you to them directly. Lead time will be 6-12 weeks depending in demand.

For those of you wedded to your 6 speeds, yes - they do a 6 speed gearset - but it is many thousands more expensive as there is a lot more involved in that build. You would only do it if you really needed to keep an overdrive gear.

Shoot me a PM if interested.

seems like every 6 months we have a thread like this.
nothing ever actually comes of it.
so....good luck

$4500USD is a huge amount of money for a gearset that doesn't exist and hasn't been designed yet.

Why don't we just adapt subaru gearboxes to the BP then.

Lol funny you mention Subaru. I had a PPG 1-4 straight cut synchromesh set for my wrx when I blew up the weak ass stock 5spd.

The gearset has been designed. However it is true that they have none on the shelf and these ones will need to be made from scratch as they are not exactly a high demand item. There are at least a dozen in use worldwide. Six of those are in Australia. A friend of mine has one but won't sell it unless I buy his whole car. The box is so good, I considered buying the car and parting it out to get the box.

There are a couple of world class designers and manufacturers of dog boxes in Australia. It is one of these.

I will probably buy a dog gearset anyway, even if I can't get others to join me. I just thought there may be a couple of racers out there who might be interested. It is pricey, but still a fair bit less than half the price of a Quaife sequential. My motivations are:

1. It's getting harder to find decent secondhand 6 speeds
2. I'm wearing 6 speeds out with high rpm shifting, esp. 3rd and 4th synchros
3. The 4th-5th shifting of the 6 speed is shitty
4. I never use 6th, even with a 4.3 rear
5. I want faster shifting.

in short, I'd rather spend more $$ now for a box that should last me many years, than keep rolling the dice on old 6 speeds that often already have tired synchros. YMMV.

i already have one person who has indicated they are keen to move... Anyone else?

You should post this in the ND section...

Yeah thats a great idea. Post about a gearset for an NA/NB in the ND section.

Had to check to see if this was m.net...

You missed the joke... The ND transmissions make the WRX glasspacks look beefy.
