Modifications needed to mount 1.8 variable TPS on 1.6 throttle body

SOLD THANKS!

This is a 1.6 throttle body off my manual car that I modified to fit a variable TPS sensor (off an automatic car). I used this when I went to my AEM EMS and wanted a variable TPS for different features.

It includes the idle control motor and the TPS sensor, but not the harness connector for the sensor.

Pics eventually.

I paid $25 for my auto TB on ebay. It is probably worth a little more than that though just because they are hard to come by.

There has been an auto TB on ebay for many many months with an opening bid of $100. Never seems to have a bid.

I've seen the same one on ebay not sell at $100 many times. that is the only one i've seen on ebay, so I know it's worth substaintially less than $100 (otherwise it would sell at an inflated price due to its rarity). the only one that I know that changed hands is already listed in this thread. I am actually in the market for one (gettting ready for emu) so if you have a number in mind, let me know...

Excuse my ingorance, but what is the advantage of having this? I have a link so would this help me in some way with my 92?

TurboTim 12-13-2006 10:15 AM

No, it would make no difference with your link. The 1.6 link does not use the TPS signal for anything other than knowing when the throttle is closed.

This is good for people with more advanced ECUs like the AEM EMS or megasquirt or even the Emanage who want to use many TPS based controls (acceleration/deceleration fuel enrichment, decel fuel cut, certain idle features, etc or if you just want TPS based fueling and ignition instead of MAP based if your N.A.)

Tim,

What modifications were necessary to mount the Variable TPS on your automatic TB? I was hoping that there were no differences in the TB and that the TPS from an automatic car of the appropriate year would just swap out with the existing TPS and that the wiring loom/connector for the standard would mate right up with the auto TPS.

Was I just hoping in vain or would an actual 90-93 automatic TPS work?
If so, they are available to order from your local parts store for around $110.
--Chris

Edit- Just checked with mazda and the list separate part numbers for the automatic and standard throttle bodies. So much for that great idea.

Automatic throttle bodies DO come with the variable TPS. There should be a mazda part number for the TPS for the 1.6 AUTOMATIC throttle body. The 1.6 manual throttle bodies DO NOT come with a variable TPS. The throttle body in this ad is a manual throttlebody modified to fit a variable TPS. After further inspection the TPS on my throttlebody is off a 94+ throttlebody, which I think is different than the 90-93 automatic TPS (but the same as a lot of other TPS's out there). I think you got all this but I'm just making sure.

Like you edited, NO the automatic TPS has a different shape and connector than the non variable TPS. You cannot just screw it on. I'll take pictures of my modifications before I ship it out to the new owner.

I had to shorten the shaft, weld the piece to the end of the shaft to drive the TPS, waterjet an adapter plate, & wire-in the new harness. Kinda easy but I don't have access to a waterjet anymore :(

OK I finally got some pictures off my camera of the modifications I made to mount a 1.8l variable throttle position sensor onto my 1.6l throttle body.

EDIT: Deleted attachments to save server space...for pictures search for thread titled "Modifications needed to mount 1.8 variable TPS on 1.6 throttle body"
