F/S Pretty Protege Valve Cover (Not A Fugly Yellow One)

1 Attachment(s)
I have a Protege valve cover for sale. This will bolt on a 1.8 leaving the cam gears exposed. I scratched up the gloss in a few spots polishing the raised lettering. A coat of clear coat would fix it and protect the polished aluminum. Otherwise, it's flawless and looks great. Paint is very smooth from sanding between coats. All the casting marks around the edges were removed for a more finished look. I pressure washed it, sanded it, removed ALL casting marks, primered it, sanded, then 3 coats of gloss black finish paint sanding between coats, then polished raised lettering.

I have a lot of time in this thing. Here's some pics of the process. http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/e...Valve%20Cover/

I would sell it for 70 Firm plus actual shipping.

Last three valve covers I had sold within one hour. Posting this F/S on m.net now. Still surprised nobody jumped on this.

where are the coils supposed to bolt up?

patsmx5 04-10-2008 12:56 AM

Well, the cover has no provisions for it. The coilpack has 3 bolts, 1 to the head, and two to the valve cover. Dopeldanger guy with the front mount powercard posted something some pics of his brackets he made for the coils to bolt up, but I can't find them. I'll link you when I do or maybe he'll chime in. Paul suggested just running COPs a while back. Either way will work.

how were you gonna get it to work with the 99 if the CAS is on the front of the stock coverm i'd buy it if i knew how to solve that

patsmx5 04-10-2008 02:20 AM

The Cam Position Sensor on the 99+ are mounted to the valve cover. To use this cover, you would have to build a little bracket to hold the sensor in front of the cam gear. I've seen pics of someones setup where they did this, can't remember who though. It's simple enough though.

If I had $70, I'd be all over this. Nice piece.

patsmx5 04-10-2008 02:46 AM

I'm open to trades Sav, shoot me a PM of what you have for trade.

Ben 04-10-2008 10:08 AM

what kind of junx are you looking for? got tons of parts

TeamPLUR 04-10-2008 11:02 AM

I have one too, but the cam position sensor is gonna be a bitch, as well as the coil bracket but im planning on running coil per cyl, if i make the bracket soon enough ill gladly take pics and do a quick write up on it if it'll motivate you all to buy that beauty(it really is, Pat)
i'd be all over it, had i not spruced up one of my own.

I have this cam cover on a 96. Made a coil bracket out of a straight piece of metal from Home Depot. Bolted it up to the rear engine hoist location using the 14mm bolt. This accomplished two things, bolted the coils firmly to the head, and lowered the coils to clear the hose fitting on the rear of the cover.

Poilshed Acorn bolts finish it off nicely. See? Well, its my old blower set up, but you get the idea...

Edit: You will also need to get Mazda Protege plug wires. The insulators are too long on the stock Miata units...I think that was what the problem was.

patsmx5 04-10-2008 12:41 PM

Ok, since everyone's broke I'm open to trades for something of equal value. I need an external adjustable FPR. I need a good BOV, a good wastegate, big injectors, etc. Typical stuff to turbocharge a car. I also need a few interior bits from a 99 or 01+ if anyone has anything. Just let me know what you have.

Ugh, I hope you're wrong. I bought the fugly yellow one, and am going to get it powdercoated. And guess what just came FedEx today? My NGK MIATA wires. :vash:

You should be fine. I pulled a spark plug wire off my miata and test fitted it to the protege cover on the BP1.8 is was installed on before I ever bought the first one. It fit perfectly, and the plug wires were the same installed height and all. The plug wires from the protege and the miata were identical on the end that goes into the VC. I don't see using stock wires to be a problem.

We figured it out. The BP Potege has longer wires. I needed the extra length when I moved the coil. The insulator is the same. Thats the only difference.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Pat, if it's still available let me know your paypal info and i will send it ASAP.

FWIW, I run this valve cover on one of my cars and had no problems with the Miata NGK Blues reaching.
