KYB AGX shocks / Tein S-Tech springs
 

These are back up for sale, but no longer NIB.

I have put 4K miles on them, mostly highway(200mile commute to school), and almost all on the lowest setting except for a month on 3/2.

These are 8-way adjustable and have been run with the Tein S-Tech springs, except for 2hrs with the eGay coilovers shown below (this combo wasn't bad, but not DD good).

I tried to sell these before installing since I knew I'd want to run stiffer springs, but didn't work out a sale in time to catch the Bilsteins I was eyeing. I've got the car completely apart for frame rails, roll bar, brake upgrade and other projects and figured now's the time.

The Teins are really nice for DD duty, and give a great drop, but should be run with NB top mounts and FCM 36mm bumpstops. I had a brainfart ordering from Fat Cat and now have 54mm stops, which I find a little too often this low. I am getting stiffer springs, and going to find a happy compromise between these and stock height by cannabalizing parts from the eGay kit and a few things I'm making in the machine shop at work. Stiffer but more comfy is the goal.



I would like $250 shipped for the shocks, and $120 shipped for the springs, but am VERY open to offers.



Shipping is for the lower 48 and one forum member in Canada I owe a favor to. Beyond that you foot whatever it costs over $10. I will not ship to Iran for personal reasons, or China for work-related reasons.

What's the rate and drop on the springs?

A shitty small manufacturer like TEIN would never post information like that on their website.

my Teins were 1.00 in the front and .75 in the rear or something like that.

I'm interested in the Springs, Blackroadster linked me to your sale.... however, are the springs for an NA (i see you list a 92 in your sig) or an NB because you talk about NB tophats.

NB hats are a common suspension upgrade, it's obviously for an NA -- read his sig. :giggle:

Springs:

Tein S-Tech 90-97 MX-5

Spring Rate:
Front: 230 lbs/in
Rear: 170 lbs/in
(this is right at 150% of stock rates)

Advertised Drop: 1.5"

I saw right between 1.25" and 1.5", and right at 1" in the rear with the 0.5" FCM style spacers. I'm pretty sure I have those and will dig them out this weekend.

Supposedly some NAs with have the rear sit a little low with just the rear springs, and so this spacer was made. Even if it doesn't sit low and you want to use the spacer to gain travel in the rear it makes for an acceptable rake that is barely noticeable, and far from the ass end squatting down. Consider it a freebie if I find them.

The drop is slightly too much for me, but would have been acceptable had I done two things differently to increase suspension travel despite the change in ride height:

1. FCM NB style top hats (shock mounts)

These give you an extra 0.5in of travel.

2. 36mm FCM bumpstops instead of the 54mm.

This is an obvious 18mm (~3/4in) more travel.

These two mods would have seriously transformed my ride. I can't afford the top hats and don't wish to pay for another set of bumpstops when I like the progression on these despite finding them too often. It's easier for me to just get close to stock ride height and try and chase down other demons.


Shocks are standards fare KYB AGX 8-way adjustables for the NA. I've seen some that are only 4 ways, and am not sure if those are a newer or older design. These we still shiny in a box in mid-April, and the car has been parked for over a month. So they have less than two months on the road, and really just over 3000 highway miles. I changed my oil 2500miles after going turbo, and parked the car shortly thereafter. The shocks went on same day as clutch a week or so before turbo.

Shocks usually retail new over $400, and the springs run from $150-$200. (note to thread crappers: please don't post links to where you found them cheaper, when I bought them this was what I saw).


They are really a great combination. After reading COUNTLESS threads on m.net it's apparent that these shocks are best mated to these springs or stock springs. They are a great daily driver setup that will give you a good drop and more confidence in the twisties.

Reason I ask what I did is because you can use the NB springs on the NA also, but you HAVE to swap the tophats otherwise you raise the car about half an inch. Therefor it's not obviously for an NA because the NB tophats are a common upgrade, one I won't be making right away.

Suspension setups can quickly get confusing for the NA/NBs, especially when trying to figure out travel and ride height.

To make things more complicated I'm turning some of my own parts on a lathe this morning. Try and figure out where you're car is going to sit when you are making custom spring perches and have no idea what the dimensions of OTS Koni perches are.....

Sxk122: I would really look into the tophat upgrade, or at the least FCM 36mm bumpstops if you are dropping the car at all (and why wouldn't you, it looks like a monster truck). I really can't stress this enough...you want all the suspension travel you can get. You may say it doesn't matter now, but will be punching yourself later. Of course I read this in tons of threads and still disregarded the advice due to finances. I am on fourth suspension setup in as many months, and you get really good at pulling shock assemblies. This time I'm doing it right.

You hit it on the nose with the "finances" statement. Add into the equation a girlfriend who finds your mattress uncomfortable and all of a sudden a large chunk of change goes out the window.... anyone bough a mattress lately? Its like buying a car... and the price..... the jew inside me is still cringing.

I feel your pain. Except in my case, neither my wife or I can stand the mattress we're sleeping on. They're expensive, to be sure, but it beats being sore all day from a crappy mattress. I'll be buying one soon.

I sleep on the floor like real men. Back support all night.

The girlfriends don't like it but that just means I get a new one every once in a while.

The car is in pieces as I'm doing a LOT of stuff to it now. I need to take pics and update my build thread. I enjoyed what I had setup for a few months, and now I'm pretty much taking everything to the next level. Lighter, stiffer, faster.

Btw, I was wondering when you'd catch this thread. Did you ever find a good setup?


Hurricane took ours out last fall. Put it up against a window, some rain came through window.

Hustler came to my house personally and told me the government wasn't giving me any damn money, for that or 3 wks of hotels. I started to argue, but the only words I caught in the tirade that followed from him were: "skullfuck", "poz rod" and "special forces." I shut up after that.



As far as the springs and shocks go...I'm meeting jaybepr (forum newb and Houston newb) today. He's new here, but is a really cool guy to chat with. He's dead set on the parts so I've considered them sold. If it falls through I'll post up. Thanks for all the interest, and for those of you that didn't catch the deal...I hope you find good suspension parts soon. I've been there. I would honestly spend more money on suspension than turbo parts if I were back at square one.
