If you haven't seen my thread in the conversion forum, here it is: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conver...ata-build.html

Also, my website has FULL build pictures and documentation: www.swaptastic.net

I have receipts for everything.

Here is a quick (not complete) overview of all the modifications/specs:

1991 Mazda Miata chassis with about 160k miles

02 Camaro LS1/T56 from Cleveland Pick-a-part with ~32k miles (have salvage title documenting 22k miles when wrecked, I have 10k miles on it since the swap)

T56 was just professionally rebuilt with upgraded parts (synchos, keys, etc) by D&D Performance less than 600 miles ago

Ford 8.8 aluminum diff with 3.55 gear

Car was dyno'd at 328whp/355wtq

Car weighs 2550lbs with 52.3% front weight distribution

Hard dog 1.75x0.120 6-point (has door bars) roll bar with harness bars

Momo Start racing seats with 6-point harnesses

Ohlins PCV adjustable coilovers with 8/6kg springs

Flyin' Miata front sway bar

Wilwood 11" big brake kit with 4 piston front caliper, larger rear rotor with stock caliper

Racing beat body kit (front, side and rear)

Mazda factory "R" rear trunk spoiler

Custom aluminum radiator (NO cooling issues whatsoever)

15x7 Kosei K1 TS wheels and 225/45 front 225/50 rear Hankook RS2 tires

Car has been used for daily driver and occasional track and autocrossing. I have put right at 10,000 miles on the car since the swap with very limited problems. The car is very robust and shocks just about everyone who encounters it. The car is an absolute BLAST to drive, it still maintains the nimbleness of a miata but now has acceleration that beats C6 Z06.

I have built three lsx miata and everyone that knows me can attest that I build them right. The reason for selling it is to get into racing.

Do want....

Are they really that expensive?

thagr81 us 06-22-2010 10:59 AM

That does seems kinda high if you ask me... Nice car though.

buffon01 06-22-2010 11:06 AM

That car has been for sale for the longest. Nice piece but I dont think there's much market for a miata with that price tag. By that I'm not saying is not worth it.

Doppelgänger 06-22-2010 11:55 AM

That's Nathan's car...and it's VERY well done. I can vouch for it..seen it on the move at the track...and it's very clean.

18psi 06-22-2010 11:59 AM

Its very well put together.
With excellent parts.

But c'mon: 23k? lol dude is dreaming.

Though some insanely rich old fart that's really into miata's probably WILL dish out that kinda dough for it

chpmnsws6 06-22-2010 12:05 PM

You guys would be surprised. If you think about it from a dollar per RELIABLE performance aspect, its hard to beat as an all around performer. If you try building on decent, you will be up over the 25k range. Trust me...... I'll go back to eating my Ramen Noodles now..... :2cents:

rugger 06-22-2010 12:25 PM

That's a badass car. I'd trade mine for it in a second.

miatacross 06-22-2010 12:28 PM

With all things considered, a perfect N/A should cost you $5k...

All the LSx parts including rear end and subframe and a used motor and trans...$10-13k

Suspension and whatnot to support the new powerband, possible brake upgrades, etc. $2-3k...

That's $17-21k not including labor. This is a rough estimate...but compared to this, a reliable and well built car that's already done and ready to be beaten to death, $23k is starting to sound reasonable.

Would I buy it even if I had the money? No. Just saying.

EDIT:

And to add more, Flyin miata does a (brand new) LS3 conversion for:

LS3 turnkey (ready to drive home) $29,940

Ship your car to us, we'll pour a big bucket of horsepower inside and you can drive it home. How's that for a road trip?

Built with all new parts by the pros at FM. Mechanically speaking, you'll end up with a new car.

480 hp crate engine from GM Performance Parts with 24 month, 50,000 mile warranty.
T56 Magnum transmission, rated for 700 hp
New, reflashed GM engine control computer
Stainless steel headers and dual exhaust
AN -6 fuel line from filter to engine
255 lph fuel pump
New starter and alternator
Your choice of rear end ratios and type
A professionally altered engine bay and transmission tunnel

Since many of the cars we deal with already have upgraded cooling systems, these are not included in the price.

With all due respect, I think that Nathan has built more V8 miatas than FlyinMiata. ;)

edit: Bottom line is that these cars are not cheap. I'm at about $8000 in my build, and I don't have big brakes yet. They sell for a good bit of money, but there's not a ton of margin in them.

rleete 06-22-2010 12:43 PM

I'd do it if I had the money to toss at it. Must be a huge blast to drive.

Cost? High, but not unreasonable. Gotta have some room to dicker. The labor alone is gonna add a lot. Hell, I've spent 2 years of summer weekends just fixing crap on my plain old NA.

True. I was just showing as comparison that $30k is what it'll cost to just take it to the big name people and get it done (even though it's with a warrantied LS3)

Or suspension, or wheels, or brakes, or anything else really. haha.

CorsaGT 06-23-2010 12:41 AM

I rode in this car at a local autocross about a month ago. It felt as fast as my FM II car, except he never got past half throttle. It's gorgeous, seemed complete, and was definitely done right. IMHO $23k for any NA in any condition is just a little ridiculous, even if it does seem to be "fairly priced" when you break down the cost for parts. After all, this is C5 Z06 money guys!

I beg to differ: http://www.flyinmiata.com/projects/build_diaries.php

smiatas 07-06-2010 02:39 AM

damn if that was in Au, i would seriously consider buying it... mazdaspeed miatas are going around $24-30k (aud which is slightly lower than USD) here....

turotufas 07-06-2010 03:20 AM

What a nice car. Definitely worth the money.
