If I were a 'newb' building a turbo Miata, why would I want this?

The O2 clamp interrupts the OEM oxygen sensor signal to the ECU and substitutes a lean signal during closed loop operation which keeps the ECU from reducing the duty cycle on the injectors. This stops the ECU from reducing the amount of fuel added by other means(like pressure or larger injectors). Primarily to eliminate the phenomena of "Lean Tip-In"

In other words...

You absolutely need this if you are building a turbo car with bandaids like bipes and an fmu!

I just want to make sure. Is it compatible with my J&S Safeguard?

The O2 clamp interferes with the Narrowband Oxygen Sensor signal only, I doubt that the knock sensor would do anything but sense knock and retard timing and could see no reason that it should be in the oxygen sensor circuit.

Check your installation instructions to be sure.

Is this something that benefits a 1.6 too?

It removes the "lean tip in" on any turbo installation where the original ECU was set up to maintain stoich (14.7 AFR) during closed loop. It keeps the ECU from trying to pull fuel until it goes into open loop(around 4000rpm on a 1.6)

i recently installed a jrsc on my 91 and among other problems i believe i'm having the lean tip in issue also. haven't had time to check the fuel preesure to make sure it is correct and i'm getting a new fuel filter tomorrow. i had to move the timing to 4* to keep from pinging also, would i still benefit from installing an 02 clamp before totally get the fuel pressure adjusted correctly and i'm looking into a bipes unit to control timing or would be putting this on with no timing control or anything just be a stab in the dark at this problem?

don't worry braineack! its now installed back in a miata! be happy for it!

I should get some pictures up of my install. Myfonti got me the turbo, braineack got me the bipes and o2 clamp...you all could see your parts back and happy in a miata.

An O2 clamp will keep your ECU from trying to remove fuel while still in closed loop regardless of timing control. You would still need to keep your timing retarded(but probably less) unless you are going higher than 6psi until you get timing control installed.
