Burning up coils help

I don't want to sound helpless or like a noob but here's my issue. I have burned up 2 coil packs trying to get my car to start. I figured the best the to do was to go with a COP setup so I did. I just got that installed but after running for 1 second my car died. immediately I went to the engine bay and smelled that electronic burning smell and saw my brand new COP driver smoking. After reading other people's posts I think its my ms2. But since I have a ms labs ms2 enhanced ecu I'm not sure what to check. I have a multimeter and the board out. Can anyone help me out?

(Edit: I'm getting a constant 12v power and two 5v signal from the wire harness when the car is not running is this normal?)

Which coils? How did you connect them? Wasted spark or sequential? What did you configure in the software?

Jmanwork 09-22-2016 05:30 PM

The COPs I'm running are the Fab9 plug and play kit so they plug directly into the stock harness. I believe they are meant for wasted spark. These are my settings below. I apologize for any dumb mistakes I am new to megasquirt. Even though I have gone through a lot of the settings and I know what most of them do, I haven't actually touched anything physically. Thanks for your patience I really want to get my car running.

Was the ECU running on the car with the stock ignition?

Also overdwell and underdwell protection should be enabled.

You should not have 5V at signal wires with the engine not running.

I will definitely turn the protections on. The car was running on stock ignition until the stock coil pack went out after about half a minute. Also, i figured the signal wires should only be giving 5v when the coils are supposed to fire. But since I have a constant 5v is there something seriously wrong?

See if turning the protections on stops the 5V issue.

I turned on dwell protection (over and under) without the coils plugged in and measured 0v at the signal wires. After seeing this I plugged back in my coils and tried to crank over. Not even a studder, it seemed like there was zero spark. I unplugged the coils then tried to measure the signal wire for 5v while a helper cranked the car over, but I never saw any voltage.

As a side note to further confirm I am getting 0v from the signal wires, before without dwell protection on the coil driver got extremely hot. Now with dwell protection on, the driver doesn't heat up at all.

If you saw the COP driver smoking, then it's probably gone.

Don't expect to be able to measure 5V while cranking - the signal is at 5V for only ~5ms every 120ms or so. A digital multimeter won't catch it.

Thanks for the information rev. I figured trying to measure the 5v signal was a little silly since is such a short duration. What scares me is replacing the driver only to fry it again. Do you think my only problem is having dwell protection set to off? In the meantime it sounds like I need to go about replacing my driver

Reverant 09-23-2016 02:14 PM

Yes, these should not be set off in your ECU version. If you don't have a permanent 5V on the signal wires, then you won't have a problem.

Thanks rev, you're the best!

Safe to assume the same protections should be configured for a BPT with Coil on Plugs using a MicroSquirt instead of a MegaSquirt? Would I need to set specific dwell settings for particular coil on plugs?

Reverant 09-25-2016 01:09 AM

These instructions apply to specific revisions of the Enhanced MS2S, I don't know if they are needed on other ECUs.

Microsquirt

Since it might be different for microsquirt, is there anyone who has installed a microsquirt with coil on plugs into a 1.8 bpt or something pretty close? I want to get rid of all the old electrical that I can from my setup to run fresh ignition. I will continue to search the forums.

Thanks
