Solder type used

Reverant,

What type of solder do you use on your units? I am presuming some form of SAC.

BOARD FINISH…
SURFACE MOUNT PASTE…
WAVE…
HAND AND TOUCH-UP…

Also, I think the Motherboards come from a different source. Are they RoHS, or
Sn-Pb?

The solder used is Sn60Pb38Cu2. Automotive control systems are exempt from RoHS.

They boards themselves are RoHS with HAL.

All units are SMD and assembled in-house.

Thanks. Looks like no worries.

Worried about tin whiskers in your ECU?

DNMakinson 05-26-2014 08:52 AM

More about any changes or repairs mixing leaded with silver is asking for disaster. I did change out my DB37 (cable end) and clipped the leads, but could have had some of the old solder involved.

But we have had whisker problems at work. Typically they come from 100% Sn plating done wrong on the leads than from the solder.

Our industry is also exempt from RoHS, but available components and individual customer specs have pushed us into Pb-free on some products.

Well, the solder used as above has proven 100% trouble free, so yeah.

DNMakinson 05-26-2014 09:06 AM

Oh,yeah, I'm quite happy with what you are using. Glad to know it is conventional. As you mention, much less to worry about, especially with SMT.
