Righto, a little disclaimer: This is by no means a definitive way to tune your car and I thoroughly recommend reading over each manual to try and understand exactly how everything works.

Now having said that, I found that while the manuals are very informative, I could have done with a simple step by step for idiots routine. So I'll try my best to create a basic outline of what to do.

1. Make sure all your mechanical stuff is installed correctly, you don't want to find yourself hunting for a problem in your Megasquirt when your dumb ass installed a check valve the wrong direction ().

2. With it all plugged in. Turn the car on, open up Megatune and set the timing which is outlined very well here:

3. Make sure you change it back from 10 to -10!!! Otherwise your car will be slow as balls... again a mistake learned from!

4. Fortunately, the stock map loaded onto the pnp unit erases a lot of the headaches involved with the custom units, you get a fairly modest tune and a lot of the complicated shit is dealt with.

5. Next up we want to actually make the car run better. The way I do this is via Megalogviewer.

6. Adjust the Air Fuel Target tables in both Mega Tune and Megalogviewer. The one in Mega Tune isn't as important but nice to do anyway. You'll want to rescale the tables for boost use.

7. This table is only used for closed loop operations so it should be scaled appropriately, 20-100kpa. Boost should be in open loop, so make sure you go to the “Open Loop” field under the “More Settings” tab. I think mine is set to 84kpa.

8. Good targets to aim for are 14.1 idle, 15.7 cruise and 13 ish for when you’re on it.

9. Next up, get in the car with the laptop plugged in, make sure all the readings make sense and then hit record. Save the file somewhere logical so you can make sure you know what is what.

10. Drive around, making sure to hit all sorts of different areas of the table; high speed/low throttle, low speed/high throttle… basically all the different places you expect to be when you normally drive.

11. Make sure to hit off! To stop the data log successfully, make sure you actually tell the program to stop rather than just turn the car off.

12. Once that’s done. Open up Mega Log Viewer.

13. Select the appropriate datalog recording, choose the correct wideband and then open up the .msq file.

14. Once that’s all kosher, select VE table analyzer. This should bring up a new window with the Fuel VE table being displayed.

15. Click on advanced and a 12x12 afr target box should show up.

16. Make sure the values in the table are scaled suitingly and are appropriate like the changes we did earlier.

17. Hit “Run Analysis.”

18. Let it do its thang.

19. Accept changes.

20. Save the .msq

21. Close datalog, open up Mega Tune.

22. Connect it to the car and get it running, then click on the “File” tab, select “Open”, choose the .msq file you just made.

23. Send and burn the values to the unit.

24. Success! You just tuned your car according to the afr values!

25. Give yourself a pat on the back for completing the first steps of Mega Squirt use. To make some real power you’ll have to do some reading up on spark tables and get some dyno time in to tune the ignition timing.

Hopefully this will help out some of the more challenged people like myself when it comes to getting started with these units. If there are any mistakes please point them out and I'll do my best to correct them.

Good guide, but I get lost here - where are the air fuel target tables?

When I click on advanced settings in MLV, my afrBins1 table appears, but it's only 8x8 ?

The air fuel target table is under "More Settings" tab and is called, "AFR Targets for VE Table 1."

The table is 8x8 because you don't have the latest version of MLV. I had the same issue. :)

Ahhh, found the AFR targets, but it's greyed out - any ideas?

My guess would be that you have not selected a wideband sensor. This is done in the MtCfg program:

it's probably been covered, but i haven't been able to find an answer in the manual or on various FAQs, but i'm going to keep looking.

i also downloaded TunerStudio, but it wasn't even open when i started the car.

i've got it hooked up and the car runs. i can verify my connection on "COM 1" in the connections menu, but when i start the car megatune doesn't seem to be working. the "guages" aren't telling me anything. i'm not using a USB adapter, just the regular serial cable.

do i need to update firmware to the unit to match the megatune version i have?

EDIT; nevermind. i tried it again this morning and got it to work.
