MSPNP Check Engine Light and CA smog checks?

Did a quick search and found little info in regards to the mspnp 90-93. Does your check engine light still function at key on engine off? Does it still work when there is an issue with engine or emissions? Please let me know as I am interested in purchasing one soon. Thanks- Bryan

Bryan858 03-15-2009 12:07 AM

Wow, does no one know if there check engine light is still working? Should come on for a second when you first turn your key and goes away after you start your car. Looks like it does not work for the build it yourseld ms's so I assume its the same for the mspnp's???

I wouldn't think it would come since you are replacing the ECU altogether. My 96 was/is ODBII, so the warning lights and so on became useless when I took out the factory ECU.

Matt Cramer 03-16-2009 12:10 PM

The MSPNP does not control the Check Engine light.

Ben 03-16-2009 06:18 PM

No reason why you couldn't build a little timer circuit on your CEL. Wouldn't cost you more than a couple bucks.

Bryan858 03-17-2009 03:53 PM

i actually modded my cel to come on as it would with a factory ecu but needed to be sure if the mspnp 90-93 will control it or not. If so I could put everything back to normal when installing the mspnp so it can control the cel... Looks like I'll be leving it modded.

Thanks for the replies and confirmation..

I've heard of folks wiring the bulb in parallel to the oil pressure light (or some other start up light) just to get it to come on and go off when you start the car to satisfy anyone watching.

Not sure how to interpret this: Do you mean that the CEL should work normally in the presence of the MSPNP or that it work work at all because MSPNP does not control it?

Bryan858: Please explain your mod.

Thanks

The CEL will not come on at all with an MSPNP installed.

It does not work at all with the MSPNP installed. The stock ECU is what controlled the check engine light, and since it's gone, there's nothing controlling that light at all.

Sorry for the delayed response fellas, I actually had a link ecu installed for a few days prior to my MSPNP so I followed the direction in my LINK ecu install to allow CEL Before start up for emmisions visual inspection. Its the behind the Glove box wire jump from Links install instructions. Hope this will help a few others with visual inspections.. - Bryan

? you make no sense man i hope you passed inspection though

sorry to resurrect an old post but, the time has come for me to have my car inspected. after 3 citations for expired registration, and threats to revoke my license, i have to pass NC inspection.

quick details: 97 w/MSPNP; maf removed; cat removed.

ok so here's the rundown. all this talk of building a timing controller for the light just seems really dumb and pointless. unless all they do is LOOK to see if the CEL comes on, then it probably won't help you get past inspection.

in NC, if you are obd2, they plug their little machine into your diagnostic plug and the first question the machine asks is, "does check engine light turn on when key is in the 'on' position?". then it runs through a cycle to test whether the ecu is communicating with the diagnostic plug. I WANT TO KNOW IF A MSPNP WILL COMMUNICATE WITH THE OBD2 PLUG! from the bit that i've read, my conclusion is that it will not communicate with the diagnostic plug, therefore automatically failing you before you really even got anywhere with the inspection process.

obviously, this is in NC, but i'm guessing that obd2 situations are fairly similar across the country, with the exclusion of CA.

all things considered, i know how dumb i am for trying to megasquirt and daily drive an obd2 car.

any thoughts?

you won't pass odbII with the mspnp in place.

You need to go back to the stock ECU for a few days.

You aren't dumb for wanting this.. It's lame how quickly many on this forum could tune a MS'ed turbo Miata to pass the hydrocarbon sniffer, but instantly lose to the scanner. A system I've read of that might interface with an OBD-II scanner is the Haltech Sprint 500 running parallel to an OEM ECU. Getting a full standalone that retains every factory function/code from someone like Haltech could be done, but not for typical Miata guy money (around $2,000).

Honda, newer domestic & EVO guys have made progress in the war against OBD-II fascism.

IIRC, this is an OBD-II scan compliant S2000 from AWD Motorsports in Florida.

^^ IDK if FL test equipment is different then a CARB scanner, but the tuner (Crispeed) claims it kept all factory functions on the 2008 S2000.

Some perspective, here's what the GT-R runs

My car is a 93. In fact, that's exactly what they do pre OBDII, look to see if the light comes on, that's all. That's what the guy at the Test Only told me, and he was very cool about the BEGI S3 on my car, was giving me tips on how to pass, and even called CARB right there on the spot to get me the CARB No.

You can build a timer using a 555 timer chip. http://www.apogeekits.com/start_stop_timer_vm141.htm

I've built plenty of Parallel Megasquirts that would pass ODB-II. Saint_Foo has a Parallel MS-II setup on his '97, the only thing keeping him from passing is the lack of an EGR setup...which should be solved soon.

Braineack, that's AWESOME! I didn't know the scope of your MS abilities lol. I've just read about the MS3's kick ass resolution, processor & features.

Haltech, Hondata (K-Pro reflash) & others that could pass OBD-II scans are all $1000+, you're a hero for working towards this with the cheaper MegaSquirt. Commiefornia has made millions the last few years with fines, impounded cars etc @ random CARB checkpoints. I avoided one last September in Concord, if you get stuck in one inspection is mandatory.

Thanks for the pioneering work, sir. :brain:

Braineack 11-28-2010 04:07 PM

I didn't pioneer it, I ran with...we started doing parallel/piggyback MS installs back in 2003. I think KingofLeet was the first to try it here, he litterally wired into the stock ECU. I started making boomslang harnesses to acheive the same result...pretty much piggyback the main signals, and take full control over spark and fuel, let the stock ECU do pretty much everything else.
