MSPNP Compatibility question

Hello,

I have a 1991 Miata which was an automatic. It is now converted to 5-speed with a engine from a 94. I was wondering which model MSPNP I should get. Will a MSPNP for a 94 work on my car?

Thanks.

did you convert the ecu and harness as well?

redrider706 06-03-2009 02:20 PM

I don't know. I just bought the car from Allen Ringgold (Hoping someone might know him here). It has a DIY turbo setup that the previous owner bought from some on this or the miata.net group. I don't think he swapped the harness or the ECU. I will mail him and ask about it.

sounds like the best bet is a diy one. either way you've got some wire identifying to do, so you might as well save the pnp money.

You want the MSPnP for the 90-93, as that's what will match the wiring harness in the car. If you haven't already, move the fuel injector harness from the 1.6 engine over to the 1.8 engine. You'll also want to retain the 1.6 coils.

Do the modification to the MSPnP in the instruction manual for variable TPS, and retain the throttle body from the 1.8 engine. You'll have to splice a couple wires here. Nothing major.

Thanks guys. I still have the 1.6 ECU and harness. I haven't figured out the TPS yet. I saw a flyin miata throttle adapter space in there (Does it say anything?). I have decided to build a mega squirt from the un-assembled kit. All the guides seem to recommend the MS1 and not the MS2. I eventually want to do a standalone MS and may be upgrade to MS3 in the future.

Which one should I go with MS1 or MS2?
What are the pros and cons with either?
I tried searching for a comparison between the two and couldn't find much.

Thanks.

The capabilities of the MS1 and MS2 are similar as far as the end-user is concerned. They differ mostly in terms of the development- the MS1 is a no-brainer 8 bit CPU that's coded in assembly. The MS2 is a more complex processor that's dealt with mostly in C.

The MS2 came out several years after the MS1, so of course it took longer for it to be stable, bug-free (or at least, bug-lite) and support all of the features of the MS1. There was a lot of FUD surrounding it. Today, I'd say that they are pretty much equal insofar as an NA owner is concerned.

I don't know what this means. My throttle position sensor does not speak.

Thanks Joe. I meant to ask if the presence of the adapter/space indicated if it was a on/off tps or a variable TPS. I will pull the connector off tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.

Not sure whet you mean about the adapter/space. The on/off TPS was used only in the M/T 90-93. It has a three wire connector. The A/T cars, as well as all '94-97 cars, had a variable TPS with a four wire connector. The NBs also have a variable TPS, though it has a three wire connector as they dropped the idle switch. The on/off TPS module is a big rectangle, whereas the variable TPS is sort of round.

Sorry for a little thread jack. Joe, I am currently doing a 1.8 (94) swap into my 90. I am using the FM spacer\adapter and retaining the 1.6 t-body, I will be installing a MS shortly and I was hoping to just reinstall the 1.8 T-body instead of getting the BMW TPS. Could you explain the steps to splice the variable into the stock wire harness. My searches are turning up many good post, but none that explain this.

Thanks
