MSPNP Gen. 1 Compatability

Hello! I'm thinking of buying a mspnp gen 1 off of a 94 miata. I have a 93. I know that they changed over from a crank angle sensor to a cam sensor. The 1.8s also had a variable TPS. They are also both OBD1 So I guess my question is can a 94 pnp be converted to work on 1.6 sensors? Thanks guys! I also plan on using this for a turbo setup shortly.

yes

supercooper 11-04-2013 05:15 PM

do you have a cat?

claurence42 11-04-2013 05:19 PM

Yes, I am currently running it with a cat. How does the cat play into things though wouldn't it be just for emissions and flow?

If you are good with soldering and wiring, it would be worth getting IF it were a damn good price.... Otherwise, you can get a MS1 pnp for a 1.6 for around $400 or so. Or, you can be awesome and get a MS3x built by one of our awesome MS dudes on here

I can get one for 400 on the dot and I'm really tempted. What would need to be adapted to make it work? I have a soldering setup with variable voltage and all that, I just don't trust myself with the tiny intricacies of a circuit board haha.

If you dont trust yourself with the circut board, just buy one thats already built for the 1.6. OR.. even better.... spend around $800 or so, and get a MS3. Ms1 systems pop up on here all the time for around $350-$450. If you want to modify the MS1 thats available to you right now, FIRST you have to decide if its worth the price. lol I mean, im sure it IS worth the price... IF you had a 1.8.
So, is this one $400???

and, sorry im not just giving the answers to you, as i dont have them. lol .... ive never looked at modifying one to work, because its usually not worth it after you look at cost of the module. Especially not having much experience with it.

But if you are adamant on modding one, im almost POSITIVE there is a thread on the subject on here that can walk you through step by step.

BUT.... here i am being a pessimist and asking..... WHY????? lol

claurence42 11-04-2013 05:52 PM

You are not being a pessimist at all haha I totally realize I am trying to cut corners. I have been looking a ton for a megasquirt for a 1.6 on the classifieds for a while now. I just have a hard time spending 800 bucks on a ecu. I know that I won't regret it doing it right the first time vs a fpr and timing box, but that's just a huge upfront cost for me. I guess I'll just save up a few more paychecks for a pnp or try to tackle the diy. It's not the soldering that's the problem its making sure I'm soldering everything to the right place haha....

Oh, ok... I get it now. lol
Well, like i said, im almost POSITIVE there is a write up on here somewhere with pictures and everything. Just make sure you look at the thread where Brain offers a custom built MS pnp as well, and compare the cost effectiveness of it.
He has a list of prices and everything. Obviously the fancier you get, the more you will pay, But his prices are VERY reasonable. Im sure you can get a MS2 for a little more than you will probably end up paying for the MS1 that you would have to Mod.

From what ive gathered on here, it would be wise to get AT LEAST the MS2

Awesome dude thank you so much, i appreciate the help.I think im just going to go for a ms2 pnp. Would you say that is still worth the 800$, with the ms3 out and stuff?

akbloom 11-05-2013 09:22 AM

Don't buy it. I have a Gen1 MS PNP and I love it, but its all surface mount components, it's not through hole like a DIY PNP or the like. While you can modify the board and change the components it will be insanely difficult as it was originally soldered by a pick and place machine.

well, from the looks of it in the classifieds section on here, Brain can build you one for around $600. And the thread is titled MS3x, so im assuming thats what he is building for that price. Shoot him a PM with all your specs, and everything you would need, and he can give you a more accurate price after sensors and everything are included
