Spark issue after megasquirt?
Hi Everyone,
Having a spark issue after installing Megasquirt and was suggested to post in this section.. UPDATE: Megasquirt, wideband, and everything else re-installed (suggested by other members). Car just cranks, but won't turn over. I posted the current tune in a reply down below, but i will re-post it up here when i get home tonight Long version - scroll down for "straight to the point" version lol I drive a 1991 Miata SE with 90,xxx original miles. It was running good until I tried to install an Innovative wideband (DB Series Wideband Kit - Blue Part #: 3795) and MegaSquirtPNP G2 ECU at the same time. Followed the instructions for everything the way they read, but after installing the required maps/settings after all was done, the car would turn over, but it would have trouble staying on and just die down. It would also drain my battery for some reason and i eventually had to keep using jumpers to another car every time. After trying to adjust the timing and what not in the Megasquirt program, timing belts, new fuel components, i gave up and completely removed ALL wiring and components (like O2 that came with the wideband kit, replaced oem ecu, etc..) and put everything back stock. At first i had to jump the car but eventually the battery charged up a bit. It would just crank and not fire for a while and eventually after replacing the parts below (most parts suggested by others and some searching but problems is still here obviously) the car now turns on and will idle about 900 but not steady. It feels like its a cammed rotary motor. Like the video below, if i remove spark plug wires # 1 or #3 the car still stays on and runs the same but if i take out #2 or #4 the car shuts off. Checked the spark by simply pulling the wire out slightly and realized 1 and 3 have very little to no spark and 2 and 4 have strong spark. Also after leaving it running for a bit (more that 5-10 min) the car will begin to leak coolant looks like out the cap and the middle parts of radiator. Like i said i'm not sure what it could be just need some advise. I've been researching for months. All parts listed below are NEW. SHORT VERSION My Miata is running as if only 2 cylinders are firing. If i remove spark plug wire #1 or #3 the car will continue to run the same, but if i remove #2 or #4 the car immediately dies down. like this guy Parts Replaced ECU Fuse Fuel Pump Fuel Filter Fuel Pressure Regulator Fuel Injectors Fuel Pump Relay Spark Plugs Spark Plug Wires Coil Pack Ignition Switch Coolant Temperature Sensor (back of motor) CAS (Cam Angle Sensor in back of motor) PCV Valve Throttle Dampening Valve MAF Box ANY advise or suggestions welcome! Thanks, Mike |
Just like in the other thread, show your spark plug wires. Coils are paired 1&4, 2&3. Sounds like you've got them 1&3 2&4.

Follow Miata Ignition - and if that doesn't work, swap the pairs, either 1&4 and 2&3 or 2&3 and 1&4 across the coil packs.

did you buy the MS new?
looks like it's not firing spark B. use the output test mode and try firing Spark A and Spark B. |

MegaSquirtPNP G2 http://www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda-Performance-Part/61-0342.html Innovative A/F gauge with O2 http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/innovate-standalone-gauge-kit-lc2-blue-db-gauge-3795-p-153.html GM Open Element IAT Sensor http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/gm-open-element-iat-sensor-with-pigtail-p-62.html When you say try firing spark A and B do you mean within the Megasquirt program? I'd have to put the MS back in (currently on stock ecu). Sorry im new to the tuning element. |
Yes - those settings are under the CAN Bus / Test Mode menu in TunerStudio. If Spark B won't fire, contact us directly at support@diyautotune.com for warranty repair.

cool, now do output test mode and test for spark a and then spark b.

Coil A - Spark on coils 1 and 4 Coil B - Spark on coils 2 and 3 Have the wires ordered like below (1.6) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455567501 Does it matter that when i uploaded the tune i got the error saying the signatures don't match? |
no.

This will sound weird but try pulling the windshield wiper fuse.
I have not figured out why but it corrected a similar situation in my car. Might not work but it's easy to try |

Could i possibly be loading the wrong type of file or megasquirt need to be updated?
|

did you make any wiring changes when you installed the megasquirt the first time? If you did, tell us exactly what you did. You said it sparks on both A and B above, was it a strong spark? can you get your hands on a tool like this Performance Tool High Energy Ignition Tester, Model# W84600 | Automotive Diagnostics| Northern Tool + Equipment . I would like to see if all spark is equal. If you pull the plugs after attempting to start, do they smell like fuel? is your injection setting sequential or untimed? can you datalog while trying to start and do a composite logger? Dont know if composite logger will help but its easy and good info.
|
get a datalog (datalog > start log) of it cranking as well as a composite log (under diagnostics tab - save to file).
your setup is mainly stock? |

your setup is mainly stock? Tried to be as detailed as possible. Below I put the wiring changes I made as well as my current tune and the data logs you guys suggested. Oh yea, the car is mainly stock besides a few bolt-ons; here are my motor/trans parts RB intake-JR Headers-Highflow Cat-Borla Catback Mishimoto Radiator/Hoses Gates Timing belt and components/water pump MSPNP2-GM IAT-Innovative Wideband w/Bosh o2-Walbro 190LPH Fuel Pump Wiring changes https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Red wires from gauge and LC-2 to thick blue wire under steering column (12 V source). Didn't cut the blue wire, just stripped a section to tap into https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 White wire from gauge connected with Yellow wire from LC-2 and ran through fire wall to the stock o2 plug https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 The black wires from the gauge and LC-2 are connected and ran through fire wall and grounded https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Removed ST Sign fuse https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Here is where I connected the MAP sensor hose https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Removed OEM MAF meter thing and put a GM IAT sensor into the back side of the stock cross over tube (right near the intake manifold) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 took the 2 wires that came with the kit and connected them to the stock MAF meter plug like below https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Uploaded the V3 3.1 map into tuner studio - "signatures don't match" - load anyway - received the errors below https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Changed the sensor settings to https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456197308 Spark Test Took a video to show you guys the spark test I ran and how strong spark is. Fuel pump switched off for test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8pv...ature=youtu.be Current tune Attachment 163235 DataLog Attachment 163233 Composite Log Attachment 163234 When I ran the logs I cranked the engine a few times for 4-5 seconds . Let me know if I missed anything |
Is your fuel pump priming when you key it on?
Try new plugs. What is your required fuel at? Like the spark test, you can test your injectors. If they're firing (careful, their test settings are a little weird), and your timing is correct, then it'll start. |
Err, those plugs look brand new in the video, so never mind.
Try the injector test. Is the engine "stalling" while cranking? Try turning your cranking advance to -5 instead of 10, under ignition options. |
