Default 6258 wastegate

Does anyone know the default waste gate strength on TSE EFR 6258?

Mine seems to stop at 8.1 psi.. which seems a bit lower than expected.

Aren't they normally equipped with the medium boost canister?

I source turbos from 3 different BW distributors, one of which gives me the option on which canister to include. Ergo, ~10 or so turbos were shipped out this year with low-boost canisters right out of the box. A low-boost can should make 8psi with a free-flowing exhaust. If you want to swap it for a medium (10psi), I can make it happen, just email me.

Dang - I was expecting 5-7 more than that =(. Might want to fix the language on the site.

"BorgWarner EFR Wastegate Actuator for EFR6258/6758/7163

All turbos come equipped with a Medium actuator.
  • Low boost actuator range 6-13psi
  • Medium boost actuator range 11-19psi
  • High boost actuator range 18-31psi"

The right way to add boost is with EBC. Best driveability is going to come from the lowest wastegate can combined with TPS-mapped EBC. The only reason to run a stiff wastegate comes when you need to increase the max boost beyond what the can+EBC combo will allow - generally, you can only get to roughly 175% of spring pressure before it becomes hard to control with a single-port actuator. A dual-port actuator and 4-port valve can stretch that to ~350%.

Those ranges are from BW's literature. Exact figures are going to vary based on a bunch of stuff (NA vs NB head, 2.25 vs 2.5 vs 3" exhaust, wastegate preload, altitude, probably some other smaller details). I've seen boost as low as 5psi on the low can with a stock exhaust.

So nearing 14 psi from 8 psi on as single port EBC would be difficult to manage? That is over ~170%

Manual boost control, screw it down and boost.

The highest I've done on a low-boost can was 15psi, and the curve was all over the place. 80%+ DC to the controller, which is basically all but shut. IOW, not enough spring pressure to prevent the flapper from blowing open at high RPM. On that car, I actually ran back to the shop and swapped it for a medium before continuing tuning. If you want to run 15-18psi, the right base can is the Medium.

The other option is to run our dual-port setup, which swaps the valve and actuator for a 4-port MAC valve and dual-port Turbosmart actuator. That comes with twin 7lb springs, so you would just remove one. That will do 15psi without any problems at all.

I can straight-swap you for a medium can, just shoot me an email.

As a long time internal wastegate guy, I just wanted to say that switching to dual port is way more productive a change than upgrading the spring

Funny, here I am trying to figure out how to make less boost... mine spikes to 12psi when rolling into the throttle at high RPM on the medium can in cold weather. Makes me nervous for my internals. Probably going to hit up BW for the weenie can when cold weather rolls back in.
FWIW in the summer heat I'm seeing 9psi steady state in the heat of summer.
