93 greddy kit not building boost, or am I?

The rundown
93 miata 1.6
megasquirt diy pnp v2
cx racing intercooler
genuine greddy bov
Greddy turbo kit
glowshift boost gauge

Here is my dilemma
the car starts and runs fine, idles good. When i rev it up I can hear the turbo spooling. Without the charge piping on I can feel the turbo push my hand away from the discharge.

when I connect the intercooler piping I register no boost on the gauge but can still hear the turbo and megasquirt reads 110kpa On the map. I'm building 20 inhg of vacuum at idle and it'll shoot up to 0 when revved.

I've checked the piping and there are no leaks, the bov never let's off any pressure, the waste gate never kicks open. BUT the first couple attempts I did blow off some loose couplers and blew off the IAC hose a couple times.

What am I doing wrong? Someone help me because I'm stumped.

Additional info that may be relevant.
I'm running the msq file for 460 injectors but changed all the values to match my 240s
I'm running a open downpipe for the time being
waste gate moves by hand and is free
car is in a non driving state so it cannot be driven

Is this when driving? Or when just reving the engine in neutral?

Tickle 03-08-2015 05:35 PM

Neutral. Car can't be driven.

aidandj 03-08-2015 05:36 PM

You won't build boost when in neutral, the engine needs a load to build boost.

deezums 03-08-2015 05:36 PM

It takes load to build boost.

eidt : whoops

Gotcha :)

I had wondered this. My dsm buddies say I should build boost in neutral and then tell me it's just because it's a chick car lol. Looks like I'll be waiting till my exhaust and injectors show up next week and take it for drive.

Thanks guys.

As others already said, you can't build boost without load... but you also said you can move the wastegate by hand... you should not be able to move the wastegate by hand. Either your wastegate actuator has zero pre-load, or something else is wrong.

I should've noted it takes some force. Its not impossible but I wouldn't wanna do it 20 times in a row.

I did take it for a rip around the block yesterday, it scoots but I'm still only seeing like 2.5 lbs of boost. Should that small amount of boost make a difference?

I didn't have my laptop in the car so I'm not sure what the map sensor saw.

The whole reason I was confused is because 2 of my buddies have dsms and they build boost in neutral and a friends civic does the same.

Thanks again.

Please do not run your car without a laptop hooked up and watching what is happening. If you have not already tuned for boost it is a recipe for a blown motor.

As to your DSM friends, this is all I can say.

^^^^^^lol

As to the tune. It should have the 5psi tune on it now. I honestly couldn't resist. I haven't drove it in 6 months.

The stock boost gauge in the DSM's is not a boost gauge, it is hooked up to the mass airflow sensor reading of the ECU... no vacuum or boost goes to the stock gauge.

If it was an aftermarket boost gauge, do they have automatic transmissions or aftermarket launch control? Either one allows you to build boost without driving (auto does have to be in gear with brakes on).

Both are aftermarket and built to the hills. Running AEM gauges. Manuals. Neither one has launch control.

Still dont understand why I'm only seeing 2lbs of boost.

Tickle 03-13-2015 04:19 PM

Ok. Got it all dialed in here after work. I'm seeing 5-6lbs and this thing is pretty nuts. Can't wait to get some more stuff done and up the boost!
