Anybody put together Stripes kit themselves?

Stripes is just doing the pipes now rather than the whole kit, so I've been trying to dig up all the parts. I found most everything except the one 1 foot bar 1"x1/16 bar of aluminum used for the bottom vertical brackets. I've looked around at Home Depot and they don't seem to have a 1'x1"x1/16" bar.

I was wondering if I can use the 1/8" bar for the bottom bracket or if it is going to cause problems?

I guess I could check at Lowes for a 1/16" bar, but otherwise I'm not sure where I will get it.

I'd email Stripes about it, but I think he is on vacation or something according to his site.

I personally doubt that bottom brackets are necessary. The top ones will hold the weight of the ic and the pipes themselves should keep the ic from moving much if any.

Also, lowes has a section of metal stuff where you can fin a piece of 1/16" aluminum that will be like 3-4 feet long that you can cut to fit.

I guess it might depend on the sort of use the car sees. If I go autocrossing it might pay to have those bottom brackets in place.

Most people who installed my kit let me know they did not install the bottom brackets and it worked just fine. I recommend using the 1/16 bar just to get the IC placement as close to my specs as possible. Once your pipes are installed, you can probably remove the bottom brackets.

See, I don't just come up with this stuff from nowhere ;)

That's a cool site. Funny thing is though when I go looking in there for aluminum bars I still can't find a 1/16" thickness bar in there.

These don't exist do they Stripes?! It's a wild goose chase! ;)

got an Ace Hardware handy? they stock aluminum strips.

Loki047 08-16-2007 03:56 PM

Haha get angle my friend, 1/16 is too thin for anything real.

PS. check the locals most of the time they have local places for metal pick up from metal express

You know, I haven't seen any nearby, but I should probably do a search. My local Sears Hardware didn't have any, but Home Depot had some.

I have the pieces for the bottom horizontal bracket and the top hanging bracket and I guess the only reason for the bottom verticals is to line the thing up. I suppose I can just measure it all out based on the instructions.

I could do that as Home Depot had some angle pieces that were 1/16 thickness.

Yes, these stores should carry this size. Sorry to hear you're are on a wild chase. You can use a thicker strip, but you many need to find a longer bolt for your fan shroud. The reason why I used 1/16 is because this size fit between the fan shroud and radiator without making any modifications.

I've been to a couple of Home Despots and neither carry the straight bar in a 1/16 size. They both have the 90 degree angles in the 1/16 size.

I'll figure something out.
