Anything I should look at while the turbo is off
I have a 1990 na with an older bell turbo kit that I'm prepping for track duty. I currently have the turbo off to install inconel studs and down pipe bolts. Is there anything else I should be looking into before I re install the turbo? Once it goes back on I'm hoping it will stay put for a while. I'm a newb when it comes to this stuff. Thanks in advance

Shaft play?

Wanna play with my shaft?

No shaft play that I can detect.

-Studs if they apply - I don't offer them yet but I believe 949 might?
-Check the gasket on your oil return if it applies. -Check for play and know what you're looking for before hand. Most ball bearing turbos use the oil to dampen the rotating assembly of the trubo so you can expect more radial play than you'd typically find in a journal bearing configuration. Just make sure, even completely drained of oil it still won't make contact with the housing. |
I have the studs and bolts ready to go. Also have a new oil return gasket. I'll look into the shaft play thing a bit more.

Now might be the time to check and make sure all the mating surfaces on the manifold and turbo are still nice and true. Maybe some stage 8 hardware to pair up with the inconel studs.

Track? Wrap and shield everything against the exhaust heat.
