hey there,i'm kinda new to these setups since i only had fwd before, allways been in mazda,i ran a over-boosted mx-3 with a custom turbokit for protege bp's

posted a couple of low 12's on street tires, exploding a transmition a week and enjoying spark cut/flat shift only on serious situation.lost traction too often doing major understeer due to boost kicking in mixed with an open fwd diff:(

sold everything not too long ago,to get a mx-5 and boost it like it should

so i got the miata, a 90 NA long nose crank with 160 000 km,perfect compression all over, got my hands on a artech turbokit(everything exept a turbo and an intercooler setup)
so i'm all 3''stainless with a manifold that fits t25-t28, so i guessed ''powwwaaa aka jeremy clarkson'' and bought a gt2871r with some 250whp goal at low boost

allready got my 550's and the MSPnP the turbokit is almost done,piping/intercooler in the mail, but as i call my turboshop to get my oil fittings he strongly sugess me to switch turbine housing(ar.80) or change it for a gt2860 because it would be more suitable to my goal/driving,the 2871r would be too big for the lil 1.6

what do you think? with a good tune could i expect boost around 3500-4000 rpm or is it just impossible

i was running a monster turbo on the mx-3 but being fully built/ported helped a lot with the spooling, something the mx-5 dosent have for the moment

so wich i run the 2871r as is within 10-15 psi expecting 250whp and driving off boost untill 4000rpm+, considering building the engine next year and would all be ready for 300+ without changing the turbo

or do i sell the 2871,buy a 2860 or simply downgrade the 2871 from an ar80 to an ar62?

just not sure about what the lil 1.6 can make compared to my old bp setup
plus it's my first ball bearring turbo so i dont quite know what to expect from it

picture of the miata and the turbokit later

Welcome, sounds like you have a nice setup.

First of all, use the "?" key. I cannot tell where ANY of your questions are, yet I think you're asking some. Use the https://www.miataturbo.net/images_pb/buttons/edit.gif to add some question marks.

Secondly, get some pictures of the Miata up.

I would say get a 2860 with the .86. 10lbs would give you some nice power. That's my current setup which is not running yet (only 1 coil fires, previous hack-job on my wiring harness i suspect) but would love to hit 220 at 8 to 9 lbs at 4krpm. What is your plan for the car?

My vote goes to the 2871.

You sacrifice a little boost threshold for more potential and much more power down the road when you're built.

i dont have major plans, not only is it my first setup based on a b6, but it's also my first rwd(took me a couple of years to wake up).and even for now,as stock as it can be, i'm having way more fun down the road with that platform:P

for now i bought the turbokit,piping/intercooler,injector,i've been playing with my megasquirt in the mx-3 for a couple of years, so i decided to go the same route and bought a MSPnP.i got the gt2871r but i started to doubt myself. the mx-3 was a speeding machine, was geared so long that hitting 235km/h in 4th was easely doeable.and that's exactly what i done want with the mx-5...i'm not affraid , it'll keep the boost till 7000 revs, but i was just wondering when will the boost would kick in? with a 1.6 and 3''stainless everywhere can i expect some nice driveability or will it be on/off?

here's a pic of my mx-3 turbo,couldn toutch 1 psi before 4800 rpm
Attachment 193663
and it's the only thing i DONT want with the mx-5 setup

next on the list is a 6-speed swap with a torsen upgrade since i'm still on the ever-so-crappy 1.6 rear end

The diaphrams in those wastegates melt.

kaboshe 10-09-2010 09:40 AM

never had those kind of problem/damage

levnubhin 10-09-2010 10:47 AM

I say stick with the 2871. The 1.6 can handle it just fine. Check my build thread and dyno sheets for proof.

If you don't want to wait until 3500 or so for boost onset I say go with a smaller turbo.

What was your old turbo in the mx3?

kaboshe 10-09-2010 02:23 PM

garrett custom built 60-1
gt35 comp houssing with .72 ar,4'' 'anti-surge'
journal bearring with 360* thrust bearring
turbine was an ar.92 with upgraded exaust blade.

i told myself to get the bigger turbo that i could find while staying ''cheap and rebuildable''and do what it takes to fit/run it
