Default New goods- the FMIIR turbo system.

Hey guys, wanted to post up to introduce our new FMIIR turbo system, we're pretty excited about it. For years when a guy needs bigger power than our standard FMII we've been grafting in an internally gated GT3071R with a .64ar hotside. In terms of power & boost control this was a great setup up until you'd get into the low-mid 20 psi range where it would tap out even though the compressor had more flow in it. So, we decided to develop an externally gated setup using a .72ar hotside that can accept a 2860, 3071 or a 3076 turbo to match your power goals. We've installed the first kit on one of our shop cars with the 3071.

We started with our FMII Hydra system & upgraded from there. The following parts are new to the R kit & our inventory:
- Externally gated GT3071R with a 4"-inlet anti-surge compressor housing.
- Turbosmart 45mm wastegate.
- New 3" downpipe that integrates the WG bypass tube. (Alternatively you can use our standard DP & dump the WG.)
- 1000cc injectors for the bigger turbos.

So this would be a pretty easy upgrade for anyone who has a current FMII system.

In addition, on the test car we've also upgraded the fuel system to the DW300LPH pump & -6 lines all the way from the tank to the fuel rail (the new FM Big Fuel Kit, not in the webstore yet). After our initial testing we're also upgrading to our FM Big Spark Kit with the LS3 coils running in full sequential. The car has a VVT engine with the FM Stroker kit w/ all the options and is running our FM Level 2 clutch. It has our full 3" DP & exhaust w/ the metallic cat. In order to support thie big boost numbers we're running the car on E85, which is awesome.

So, here's a chart of our best effort from day 1 on the dyno. It was very strong all the way up, and then above this it started getting a spark misfire- hence the spark kit being installed. This run shows the corrected (21 PSIG) and uncorrected (219 kPa) output.

Here's an uncorrected chart vs. our stock-engined '99 FMII, Hydra GT2560R at 164 kPa.

Anyway, let us know what you guys think- we can't wait to get some of these kits on the street.

You guys can send me the whole setup and I'll do some durability testing.

Even the vendors are finally starting to step up to big boy turbo setups.
I love it

Yeah, more boost is next once we get the new ignition system going. I'm estimating we've got about another 2 mS injector on-time to work with as it sits so ultimately I think the 1000cc / E85 setup will be well matched to the flow potential of the 3071 compressor we have on there.

Why did you guys go with the 3071 instead of the 3571? I thought you guys did a test a while back showing that spool up was almost exactly the same between the 2.

Yes sir! Will possibly have 2560 and 550cc up for sale soon.

I just started a complete rebuild of my 94. I am actually already going with the 3071 and now this just confirms my plan as being on the right path.

It looks great...

I'm curious about the relative spool and potential power requirements out of a built 1.8 (no stroker) engine. (For potential upgrade from my current FMII setup)

I'm more curious about what you will be doing for improved crankcase ventilation at the high boost levels.

Interested in a crankcase vacuum pump kit.

That looks just like a ATP housing.

Have you had any problems with them cracking or fitment issues? I almost went with that housing about a year ago, but was scared off by reviews.

Toss a GTX-R3076 on there and see what happens....

The .72 a/r w/external on the top looks like the ATP part as well. Oh if it would only fit a 2560, I would have ordered one and gone EWG.

Nice to see that it fits under the hood and that you guys tried it out as I was very curious about this. Eventually I'd like to go with a 2860RS with the .72 EWG.

I'd like to see how a GT35 reacts.

This 3071 is actually the biggest turbo we've set up here at the shop. I'd like to try a 3076 in this setup & go for 500hp but I think it'd be borderline too laggy for a street BP. IMO anything bigger than that would for sure be too laggy. Kind of like the T66 I had on my Turbo 2- 14.0 @ 116 mph.

The Stroker is definitely buying a couple hundred RPM of spool & some torque, but the top end HP potential is the same. With a built 1.8 it'll still be very potent, especially if your build will keep making power to 7500 or 8000 rpm.

We are installing a new, really nice catch can setup on the car. We hope to turn it into a Miata kit if it works out, so stay tuned there. No immediate plans for a vacuum system in the crankcase, but we'll discuss that pending how effective the new catch can is.

Yes, it is the ATP housing. So far so good- we've been driving the car with it on there since last fall. Kit fitment was spot-on, and it fits great under the hood. We did have to cut & weld the frame rail. We just have to come up with a new turbine heatshield which is no big deal. I bet this R setup with the 2860 would be a pretty awesome 1.8 setup for road racing.

Race it and see. ~900*f fluctuations 5x per lap will tell you if that's a good casting. This is coming from a guy who regularly warped "indestructible" cast iron manifolds 3-times in 3-track days, usually on the first 5-laps if the turbo stayed on the manifold.

I thought you guys were inherently against that turbo due to the overlap from the GT2560r and the GT2871? Is thiis another case where that's the smallest turbo which fits that turbine housing? I should note that I applaud the GT2860rs, and always have even on the log manifold.

As for anyone on the fence, EWG is worth the added cost, the boost gauge snaps to target every time.

We'll have to get pics of the frame rail mod for the instructions, hopefully Keith can snap some soon.

Up to around 12 psi I like the 2560 over the 2860, and that's where the majority of stock-engined setups will be. I think the 2860 is better than the 2560 from 15-18 psi, however, at the same power level I like the internally gated 3071 a lot more than the 2860. So, for a standard FMII the 2860 never really had a place on the shelf.

In this new externally gated R setup the 2860 is simply the smallest turbo we can get for it so for a built enigne that can take some boost but doesn't want a 400+hp turbo I think it'll have a place in the lineup.

I agree with you totally on the 15-18psi numbers, but I really like making torque at 3500rpm. At 11psi my car is solid on the track though a bit underpowered feeling, at 15psi it comes alive and becomes angry, 18psi is wild. Unfortunately NASA makes me run 210whp in TTB so my GT2860rs is horribly inneficient at that level.

I don't understand you big HP guys, you're significantly more brave than I am.
