Begi S3 Stock Boost?
I know, I know, this is a stupid question, but I can't find it anywhere. How much boost is a Begi S3 kit set up to run strait from the Bell? Anybody know off hand?

Website says 6-12psi... so the can is probably a 6psi can w/adjustable rod. MBC or EBC will get you as much as you want over that. Out of curiosity, why do you ask? |
there is no set boost figure because its up to you to decide.
|
I'm just curious what I am going to see on the stock kit, w/o a boost controller. That is, if I don't take a sledgehammer to the thing first.
|
My manual says 6-7 psi. I loaded the PDF for yours, and it was missing like the huge part at the end where it says it.

I can tell you what it will make on a 94 with a turbo exhaust and the 2860 option.
13 fucking psi from 6k up with the included adjustable wastegate adjusted all the way soft until the flapper door is rattling cuz it's not tightly closed. Truth. EBC duty cycle set to 0 from 5k up. Car overboosts the owners goal of 12psi. That was this evening when the temp was 70F. He is now gonna look into a softer actuator. we were able to make 8psi at 3000 and 12psi by 4000 with the EBC. With the flapper door wired full open the car made 6psi when it was 80-85F |
That be the truth. Ported wastegate and all. We also first tried Paul's actuator on my car with no EBC which on his 2560 makes 6psi on its softest setting. I was hitting 9.5psi by 6700rpmish with overboost protection set at 10psi. So I need to find a magic wastegate and/or turn boost up until it's stable. Maybe if I can make a dyno day i'll try 14psi.
|
Unless specifically asked for, we usually include an adjustable 7 psi actuator. However, if you hook up a boost solenoid to a MS, the over boost condition occurs. Something wrong with the EBC solenoid, not the actuator.

Um no. Like it says above. With the wastegate wired open it made 6psi. With a wastegate which on another setup made 6psi, on mine made 9.5 before boost cut let it go further. This was without the EBC hooked up at all. With the ebc hooked up and the duty table SET TO ZERO in the upper RPMs it still wants to spool past 14psi, WITH THE EBC OFF, and the wastegate flapping around not even completely closed in a static position!
|
i should have requested a 3psi spring in my shiz. oh whale.

It's adjusted as down as possible basically. It's partially open now even when it's not in boost. You can hear it leaking all the time. I'm going to try more spark advance in boost to begin with. Otherwise I'd like a softer actuator so I don't have to deal with losing spool on the bottom end like I do now, but still be able to control the top end.
|
No. With NO EBC installed on the car, therefor no EBC malfunctioning, with the wastegate actuator arm adjsuted all the way out till the flapper door isn't even sealed against the wastegate at idle the car still made 13 lbs of boost over 6000rpm. It's behaving exactly like a turbo that didn't have the wastegate ported. I mean how much boost is expected when the wastegate door is propped open? People like to throw around the figures 1-2psi. Well this makes 6 in that instance on a 85F day. So come NJ/NY winter in it's current state with the wastegate completely open it's gonna be making 9psi+.
The only thing that can be adjusted down is the Overboost protection value. That's a great fix. Jan, other than a softer wastegate I can only think maybe a 1-2 lb helper spring might do the trick. |
hmm, is it possible that the wastegate was not ported correctly. As far as I can remember the porting consisted of a kind of trough coming from the wastgate directed towards the turbine exit. I don't think the hole of the wastegate itself looked like it had been made any larger.

Do you want to try a new actuator and see if the one you have is defective. It does not seem likely, but who knows.... Stephanie |
I'm going to TN this weekend until monday so I can't get a picture until then. I've taken all of next week off of work. On Tuesday I'm going to take the downpipe off. I'll snap a pic of the wastgate port. My other guess is maybe the flapper door is hitting the downpipe flange or the seperator for the divorced gasses. If those two things turn out not to be the problem I would definitely appreciate it if you guys could send me another (softer) wastegate to try.
|
defective actuator wouldn't explain 6 psi with wastegate held open. or is that to be expected?
|
what I find really fishy is that Cueball (another member here) has Begi's S4 manifold without an external gate, a 2.5" exhaust with no cat and the same turbo and he's running 10psi with EBC and only overboosting to 12psi. I'd have to think his setup flows at least as well if not better than my cast manifold and 3" exhaust with cat.
|
Do you mean fishy that he is overboosting?
Stephanie |
Check your timing - aside from that I shortened the Bell downpipe - I know it was like multilating a sculpture cause it is georgous (SS) but after I shortened it (with a cutoff wheel mind you so it's not really mutilated all that much) my overboosting went away completely... Food for thought. Stock on S3 is 6 - 12, start low and tune and slowly turn it up (obviously). But check your timing with a timing light just as a sanity check. If it's off you can overboost also inadvertantly.
Any which way Bell will get you sorted out or try their best to - thx Steph :-) Damn S3 is responsible for 4 sets of tires now :-P I love this shit. Give Corkey my regards. -Ben |
How exactly does shortening the downpipe make you not overboost?
|
No idea but it did.....
|
I meant fishy in that he has a less restrictive exhaust side and yet his boost is more controlled than mine. The timing is accurate also.
