Question Help with FM 1.6 hybrid DP

Does anybody know if a 1.6 Fm hybrid DP would fit on a 1.8 NA?
Already called Fm and they said that it might fit but didn't recommend it because they've never tried it before.
Can anyone chime in on this?

Thanks

BTW, I'm planning to use current FM manifold and turbine outlet casting.

it should work as the placement of the motors is all relative. so on both motors and turbo should be in a very similar location in relation to the frame and k-member and tranny and all that good stuff.

Doesnt hurt to try if you already have the parts.

When I was shopping for a new miata, I was looking at 94-95s and was planning on just swapping the manifold and keeping my exhaust and DP.

Thanks Braineack, I wish I have the parts in hand to try it on, the guy selling the DP is not local.

The FM Downpipe has a lot of adjustability built in. I would think it would fit.. Cant know until you try though

I have my misgivings that it'll fit. I have both a 1.8 and 1.6 DP and they don't have the same bends.

I know the cats are suppose to line up w/ the 1.6 hybrid and 1.8, but everything anterior to that seems like it's slightly different.

Hey kenzo42 to which side of the DP will be a problem if it's the clearance between the tunnel side and DP, is it possible the message the tunnel? but if it's the tranny side I prob. can't do anything then, right? Are there any other clearance problems I could run into?
Thanks guys.

Well I can tell you now how it will work.

I have a 1.8 motor in a 1.6 car with a 1.6 FM3 downpipe. The downpipe will clear everything fine but it will be about 2-3" short from the stock cat location.

Also side note before someone brings it up. The downpipe for the 1.8 are a few inches longer to take into account the fact the 1.8 motors are longer. Therefore when you center the turbo it pushes the turbo an inch or two forward causing the gap.

edit:: I am running an older turbo kit. I am not sure if there is any differences with the newer kits.

Sorry, I think I might have misled you. When I said I don't think it'll fit, I meant it probably won't be PNP.

I started a thread over at M.net about it a while back.

Me: Will a BEGI 94 turbo downpiipe fit on a 91, if I use the 94 cat?
Or are there clearance issues?
Thanks.

Corky: No, sir.

A more specific thread pertaining to the hybrid vs 1.8 DP:

JasonRobo:
The 1.6 is a shorter engine. So the turbo is physically a bit closer to the firewall compared to the 1.8. Therefore the downpipe has a slightly different path to follow. So that is the difference. Obviously you know that the rear end of the DP is the same because that is described on the FM website. Also the top end of the DP is the same because it is the same turbo. Therefore, only the middle section can be and IS different.

Keith:
That's right, the turbo sits a little further forward and the downpipe is shaped to take that into account. Diameters are the same.

Again.. I am currently running a mixed match downpipe setup.

So plan and simple:

A 1.6 downpipe on a 1.8 more will clear(it is close the sub-frame but doesn't touch) but leaves a 2-3 inch gap at the cat

A 1.8 downpipe on a 1.6 motor will cause the cat flange to be 2-3 inches passed the stock location.

The difference between stock NA6 and NA8 exhaust after the stock header is the angle of the flange on the downpipe, the stupid little step-down on the NA6, and the second O2 bung for NA8. Other then that they are the same.

Okay, so the DP has no clearance issues only it's too short to reach the cat, right? I know that there's some adjustabilities in the FM DP but not sure how far it could go, am I correct?
If it doesn't work out, can I take it to a muffler shop and have them cut and extend the DP?
Thanks

My FM down pipe has some length adjustability to it, I don’t see why a muffler shop couldn’t weld a piece into it to extend it, you might want to have them weld a section of flex pipe into if it doesn’t have one already.

It could certainly be made to work. The DP shape isn't really that different - the different bends are for ground clearance, IIRC, and I think we had a 1.8 DP on one of our 1.6 cars for a short period. It's been a while so the details aren't too clear in my mind.

There might be enough adjustability in the slip joint to simply make this a bolt-on, I'm not sure. A muffler shop could easily do a bit of alteration to make it work.

Thanks everyone.
Keith, I'm planning to use a BEGI 1.8 manifold(because I got it for a good price from a member) with current FM 1.6 kit, other than the throttle body pipe, manifold and 1.6 hybrid DP, are there any other conflicts I should look into? and wondering if FM water and oil drain hardlines would fit?
BTW, I already have Voodoo box, Bipes, 305cc Supra injectors and FM turbo exhaust.
I'm shooting for 200-210whp @ around 10psi with this setup, possible? Do I need a dual feed fuel rail to be safe for what I'm looking for?

The BEGi manifold shouldn't cause any problems if it's machined correctly. Both companies use the same turbo location. The water and oil hard lines should fit as well. I'm assuming you're using a GT2560R turbo.

The power goal should be attainable, yes. I don't think a dual feed rail would be necessary.
