Blowing oil smoke on upshifts to 5th - Greddy
 
Hi all,

I've got pretty much a standard Greddy kit on my car. I've added a blow off valve, and have been stock piling a bunch of goodies for when I have more time to get work done. The car runs well, pulls hard, but after being into the boost and letting off and shifting to 5th gear I'll get a plume of smoke out the exhaust for about 3-5 seconds. I've been monitoring oil use and it is consuming some. Things got better after I installed thed BOV; and the Greddy oil return line is torturous in it's routing (I have another oilpan with a return tap right under the turbo waiting to install).

Is it the piss-poor setup of the standard oil return line causing oil to pool and back up or where should I be looking for problems?

Could be the drain, could be rings, could be a lot of things. 3-5 secs of smoke kinda makes me think the oil drain would be the issue though...pull the DP off and stick your finger in there and see if it comes out oily. This is how I check hookers, works every time.

Hint: it will be easier to drill/tap your current oil pan than it will be to swap in the new one. Not sure what you're waiting for, prolly the cheapest and best upgrade you can do to your current setup. Certainly the first thing i'd have done.

Drain is the 1st and easiest potential problem/fix. If the engine is pulling oil under vacuum it could be valve seals.

I adjusted the blow off valve; it wasn't holding under boost; and the oil smoke has been solved for now.

I bought an oil pan with drain tapped in for a number of reasons; I plan to pull the motor soon and re-do a bunch of seals and figured it would be easier to swap pans then to tap mine just in case something went wrong. As it stands now I'm making my full 5 psi :) More to come! Thanks guys

This is an old thread but I have a similar problem.

I just took my maiden voyage in my 1991 with a Greddy TDO4.

Just took her around the block and checked everything for leaks etc....

When I removed the AFM and cone that are right at the turbo I see a small about of blackish oil smeared around. ( ? )

My oil return line is sort of snaked around because it is somewhat long. The path is long but it is sloped down the whole way. I'll be able to shorten it to its final size once I run the IC pipes.

Any ideas ?

If you're using a stock greddy setup, chances are the intake tube is pulling a bit of oil from your valve cover (pretty sure it has a fitting that goes from the exhaust side of the valve cover to the inlet tube that's hooked up to the maf). Probably nothing to worry about as long as you don't have a bunch of smoke burning.

Oh and just tap that fugging pan already and get rid of the stupid 50ft return line. Surprised there's any oil left in the motor when the oil is returning through there.

I did not explain properly.. The oil is on the suction side of the turbo. The only thing in front of it is the AFM, cone filter.

You explained yourself perfectly fine. I'm like 99% sure there's a line going from your valve cover to the metal inlet pipe that connects the AFM to the turbo. The sucking action takes pressure out of the valve cover, and also might pull some oil with it.

I had the same problem in high rpms under load and shift up. My turbine housing was cracked.

Check the Turbo, Oilreturnline, downpipe, airfilter and the intercooler piping. Maybe you can disconnect the wastegate and check if it blows less oil without a high spinning turbo.

I got rid of the original issue of oil on the turbo inlet by venting the valve cover using a small cone filter like vent thingy.

Now I smell blow by oil fumes during heavy boost but there seems to be no oil on the small filter vent itself.

Instead of the above vent, you guys think I should run a hose from the valve cover to the turbo inlet pipe so that it sucks the smelly vapors back in ?

Well that's what the greddy kit does, but then you will be pulling some oil from the valve cover into your inlet. It's not a big deal at all really, but people just freak out when they see oil in there.

I would think that too but I've found no oil on the breather filter...

The breather won't have any oil because it doesn't have suction pulling the oil out. Like imaging your turbo intake, it will have a ton of vacuum on it as your turbo sucks air in, this in turn can pull some oil out of that breather port. If it's just vented you just get gas venting out to the atmosphere.

Good point!

Maybe I can have the hose out toward the air filter inlet so it does not see the full draw from the turbo suction. The sucktion would still capture the oily smell but not suck oil out of the valve cover.

That's a great idea actually. If you could put it right in the filter (maybe through a rubber section at the top of the cone) it would probably work really well.

WTF!!!!!! I routed my valve cover to the pipe leading to the turbo right behind the Air filter and I still get that smell !!!! :vash:

This has really got my stumped!

could the oil be temporarily getting past the oil seals in the turbo ?

I don't seem to be loosing any oil anywhere

Turbo is a TD04H-14g
