Im old, so I might have missed the answer to my question, but I DID search....

From my reading, there are parts on a DIY kit where one can "skimp" and place you CANNOT. I get that.

I could not find a specific "direction" regarding a BOV.

What to get?

I have a (real) Greddy on my Eclipse, but thats a different beast. On the Miata, I dont know if I should budget $60 for a cheapie, or $250 for a "real" one. Synapse is what Im thinking on the high end...

Thoughts?
Suggestions?

Ha, $60 is cheap? Try $20 for a Bosch unit and call it good. With the lower pressures (sub 15) that most of us are happy with, it'll work great for you.

or get something that's not a piece of shit, for 100. Which is a decent deal.

I had a Greddy RS on my car for awhile, now have a RFL. Both "real" names, and have no problems...not that I expect a BOV to. Now, on my GFs MSM, I picked up a "cheap" #1One brand from NOPI years ago just for shits and giggles. It's been on the car for 5 years with no problems. In fact, the cheap thing actually seals perfectly at idle, which is a good thing for a car with a MAS. I know some people on M-S tried different BOVs on their cars and a number of them had slight leaks at idle which would cause the car to stall or have idle-droop.

Conclusion- you'll probably not have any problems with whatever you get. Just make sure it closes/seals at idle unless you're running an ECU with MAP....then it doesn't matter. Are you after a particular sound from a BOV?

I've got a HKS SSQV, not sure if it's real or not but worked fine when tested it out. Only paid like $80 for it lol

SSQV is garbage valve. Very weak shit design. The cheap ebay ones use aluminum for all parts including the high wear parts. The real valve uses a metal shaft which is good however it still has the common weaknesses such as a rubber diaphragm.

Get a forge piston valve for like 120-140 (new - depending if you want the double piston or single piston design).

I'm guessing the op has already gotten a valve but trust my response about the ssqv.

What's the deal with turbosmart? Those aren't expensive, and i've never heard of anyone having problems with one. You can get a 34mm for a little over $100. I've used two of them so far and i think that's about what i paid.

I used a Turbosmart re-circ valve on my subie and loved it. So i picked up a turbosmart veeport for the miata. Just installed it yesterday and i am happy with it so far.

TIAL is the only wasy to go just my 2 cents... built in the USA.. MI to be exact.

I have a Greddy type-s knockoff that I got as part of a deal for an almost complete turbo kit. I've yet to install everything. it looks like one of those $20-40 Ebay bov's. Anyone have any experience with this bov?

the short answer is they work. the long answer is not all of them and not all the time.

Eh, I've had a Greddy Type RS knockoff from eBay on my car for about 6-7 years now with zero issues. It leaks a little at idle, but on a MAP, I don't care. I tightened it up a bit to prevent this, but then I got a little compressor surge, so I backed it off again.

For the price, it won't exactly be a huge loss if it doesn't work out.

My experience with bovs on the two turbo cars I have worked on.

Greddy RS: Can get to seal at idle, kind of slow opening
Ebay Greddy Knock off: Could get to seal with lower port disconnected but opened slow, opened quick with lower port connected but leaks at idle. I have had pretty good luck with these.
Blitz: pos, leaky and surgetastic
Turbosmart: No idea on leaks since it's recirculated. Works fine though

Short story either recirculate or run megasquirt and do not care.

1g DSM. Cheap, tight up to 15-18psi, can be easily modified to hold a lot more. Noisy under vac but other than that mine has been a peach.

I have a hard on for the super ricer Greddy Type S (makes dat chingy sound, yo). Buffon runs the NRG Type S which is just a better made version of the greddy with a stronger diaphragm and seals. It's AWESOME.
