burning oil
 

hows it going guys. I've got a greddy turbo miata right now and ive been burning a little oil. I am not sure where its burning off from. i am pretty sure its not the valve cover. one thing that i noticed was that when i am driving though the street i will burn more oil. but after i start boosting the oil burns off or something and it quits burning as much. could the oil be pooling somewhere? i bought the car with the turbo and he guy had the turbo in for a long time. maybe i need to rebuild the turbo?

any advice woul be awesome. thanks alot

How many miles on the car? How abused is it? I'm cooking some oil off, but I think it's a problem with the piston rings and it's not a huge amount so I'm not terribly concerned in the short term about it since it passed smog.

it's burning out of the exhaust right? so you are seeing smoke?

check the pcv valve. take off the intake and check the pipe there for oil.

yeah i can see the oil burning off from the exhaust. the car isnt too abused i think? i pulled off the pcv valve and there was a bit of oil in it. But i also noticed that there was a crack in the hose that goes from the throttle body to the valve cover. could that be the problem? imma buy a new hose today and see what happens.

i got the car wit hthe turbo on it already. the guy said he has roughly 5k miles on the car with the turbo. so i think its time for a rebuild. the engine has 170k on it all stock.

can you blow into the pcv valve? it's probably failed.

if not, the engine is burning it, or the turbo is expelling it.

does you breather line on the driver side of the valve cover go into the intake, before the turbo?

does your oil drain line have any uphill travel or kinks?


easy way to test if its the engine is a leakdown test.

If it's the stock greddy kit that is likely the problem. Tap the oil-pan and run a straight drain instead of that around the block crap.

Hahahah i was taking off the pcv valve and i broke it off lol
so i think i need to buy a new one. lol

what do you mean by the breather line on the drivers side? there are 2 lines coming out of the valve cover. one is the pcv, and the other right now has nothing going to it. i have a air filter on it and thats it. Where should that go? have pics by any chance?

and i have already tapped the oil pan. so thats not a problem

that's ok, but it should go into the intake. this help pull oil out of the turbo, but a tapped pan and your stock feed line should be good.

is it now saturated in oil?

I'm curious on this one - the breather line on the driver's side - why would you want this going into the charge pipe before the compressor vs just plugging charge breather hose line inlet(assuming you have one) and using a small air filter ? Seems you get a fair amount of oil vapor/mist going into the turbo and the rest of your piping and IC and eventually intake if you go this route ? I recently changed mine to not do this to see if it had any effect on a little smoke burning from the tail pipe occcasionally). Given that making this change can cause idle to be funny if you're using a mass a/f meter since technically this is metered air or is it ?

As Scott said. It helps take oil out of the turbo. With just an "air filter" you will get blow by and oil will get places. You can just get a oil catch can, Do a search ;) it catches any oil that can get past the valve cover.
