The upgraded studs are for the mani-turbo bolts (and the turbo-DP bolts if you want to get fancy). IIRC they're 8x1.25 exhaust studs and the corresponding nut & lockwasher OR locknut.

turbobluemiata 08-01-2007 05:05 PM

what is the easiest way to make the cuts and what kind of saw works best????

Bryce 08-01-2007 05:21 PM

A sawzall with a metal-cutting blade make the cuts pretty well, but for the corners I resorted to the hacksaw because the sawzall likes to jump out of the cut while you're making it.
I would go back and widen all the cuts to the width of the sawzall blade because I've been told of firsthand accounts where the cuts (made with just a hacksaw) were skinny enough that they fused together with heat.

Is the middle cut really only supposed to go halfwayish through in the link posted?

kotomile 08-01-2007 05:29 PM

no, it's meant to go all the way through.

TBM - just use a sawzall. Get some earplugs too, it gets LOUD.

Braineack 08-01-2007 06:08 PM

if it were me i'd just do in between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 and call it a day....the rest is over the top.

turbobluemiata 08-02-2007 12:29 AM

also im dumb on the bolt sizes dont understand what 8x 1.25 means grade 8 im guess but what is the 1.25?

Slidin'Miata916 08-02-2007 12:34 AM

just take the stud to the hardware store, and find matching studs and nuts.

turbobluemiata 08-02-2007 12:50 AM

huh so if i am taking the stud to the hardware store than what am i gettting thats diff? im so confused

turbobluemiata 08-02-2007 12:51 AM

sorry to be so stupid just trying to understand

Slidin'Miata916 08-02-2007 12:58 AM

Wait. Im Sorry. I thouhgt you were replacing Studs and nuts. My Bad

turbobluemiata 08-02-2007 01:01 AM

no i have the greddy kit how it comes but everyone says to replace with upgraded shit the guy a few posts ago said the size but doesnt tell me anything really??? still confused i got the relief cuts figured out

Slidin'Miata916 08-02-2007 01:10 AM

If you are replacing the studs and nuts, just take one out and take it to the Hardware store with you, and get the same size stud, nut, and lockwasher, Or Stud and locknut

IIRC they're 8x1.25 exhaust studs and the corresponding nut & lockwasher OR locknut.

kotomile 08-02-2007 01:48 AM

You go to the parts store and look for the exhaust studs that say "8x1.25" on the baggie. They're a little over an inch long.. and they'll probably be black...

If you can't figure that out, go to the guy behind the counter and ask him where the "grade eight, size eight by one-twenty-five millimeter exhaust studs" are.

turbobluemiata 08-02-2007 01:51 AM

Thats The Kind Of Answer Im Looking For Simple And To The Point Thanks!

Braineack 08-02-2007 08:47 AM

M8 is the size of the threading.

You'd want (4) M10 studs for the manifold to turbo flange, IIRC.

1.25" is the tread pitch. So look for M10x1.25 Grade 8 Automotive Studs.

You'll want M8 for the turbo to downpipe.

Make sure they are long enough so you can fit your new nuts on them, but not too long that the stick out and get in the way of mounting things.

like this:
https://www.miataturbo.net/braineack...Small%2529.jpg

Dont take my word for the sizing, bring the manifold and turbo with you and make sure. ACE hardware sells everything you need.

kotomile 08-02-2007 04:24 PM

Brain - the greddy uses the same diameter bolts/studs for mani-turbo and turbo-DP.

Since they are Metric, they will probably be rated as "Class 10.9" rather than Grade 8.

turbobluemiata 08-02-2007 11:45 PM

went to ace hardware today no luck at all the ppl working there didnt help at all either couldnt find the sizes i need or the grade i wanted they only had class 8.8 or something like that this is frustrating lol!

Did you or did you not take the stud with you....
Just do that...
Like I said....

Pitlab77 08-02-2007 11:55 PM

I would make them thicker than the picture of that HKS manifold. I have seen thin cuts fuse back together over time

turbobluemiata 08-03-2007 12:36 AM

i dont have the studs i have the original bolts

Slidin'Miata916 08-03-2007 12:39 AM

the mani didnt come with studs?

turbobluemiata 08-03-2007 12:43 AM

nope it came with some bolts

kotomile 08-03-2007 01:54 AM

so take the bolts and match the thread...

Uh..
Am I not saying something right?
If im not, sorry, but, just take them there and find some matchings, like koto said..

In the nuts and bolts section they'll have a bin labeled "automotive studs." Those are what you wanted. Dont worry about the class/grade, just get the correct size. Don't ask for help in stores like that, you'll get help from 90 year old men on their last breath who don't even know their piss from apple juice.

turbobluemiata 08-05-2007 12:34 AM

so i went to both the ace hardwares today and found the bin with auto studs yep sure didnt have the right sizes they were way to long and they only had like 5 diff ones

turbobluemiata 08-05-2007 12:34 AM

and the wrong thread pitch at that

Slidin'Miata916 08-05-2007 12:58 AM

your obviously not looking in the right spot. Did you tell them its for an exhaust mani for a miata. I know the ace down here, its divided between foreign and domestic Hehe.

turbobluemiata 08-05-2007 01:09 AM

yea they were like M8x1.00 and M6 M10 but not M8x1.25
