clutch recommendation?
I've been reading the threads on here about Ben and SamNavy and their experiences with ACT and Spec clutches.
I'm looking for a clutch that will last with some occasional drag racing and drift action, but mostly for just weekend cruising. I am about to bring my car to the dyno for a tune (finally), and i want a clutch that can handle the 200+ ft/lbs of torque i intend (hopefully) to make. Pedal feel isn't that important. My old mx6 used to have a heavy as hell clutch that was on the floor, and i just got used to it. In fact, moving over to my miata with a stock clutch was like learning to drive all over again. lol. Right now I'm considering the 1.8 Spec Stage II (iffy) and the 1.8 ACT HD (i will need a flywheel for either.). Any thoughts or other recommendations? In regards to flywheels: How much heavier is the 1.8 flywheel than the 1.6? I would like to avoid adding an unnecessarily heavier flywheel to the car, as one of the things i like best about the 1.6 is its ability to rev easily. If that's a problem, what's my best option in a 1.6L clutch? Thanks guys. |

I would go to the larger 1.8 no matter which clutch. More surface area = mo betta.
I have no direct experience with a Spec II, but there are a lot of negative experiences out there. Haven't ever heard anything bad about their Stage III. So far, I like my ACT HD. It felt a little heavy to me at first, but either I've just gotten used to it, or my left leg has gotten a little stronger (my left leg is not very strong after injury and surgery--I still have trouble walking down stairs). |
I have the ACT 6 puck HD along with their 9 lb flywheel for the 1.8s. I absolutely love this thing.Holds 299lbs of torque so I can modify freely without worrying about clutch slippage.

heavy pedal = you not gonna slip= you get to go fast. ;)

I put in a 1.8 flywheel with an RPS Sport and sprung 6 puck. Pedal is not too hard, I can control lockup in traffic and it holds 15psi. Except for the Fidanza noise on deceleration, I really like the setup.

ACT XT and don't look back. The extra pedal effort is minimal in my opinion. The clutch engagement is earlier than stock, but you get used to it.

I just went from ACT HD to a Centerforce DF, i'll let you know the results, but I've heard great things from Competition Clutch.

Thanks for all the quick responses everyone. That was exactly the info i was looking for. I went ahead and placed my order for the 1.6 ACT XT with mvpmotorsports. :)
Now if my new intercooler will come in and if Tony will email me back about that DP, we'll be in business. :D Several of my friends and I are planning a trip for the end of May to NC/TN to go run the Tail of the Dragon. I'm trying to get all this stuff done for the drive. I still have to break in the clutch and get the car tuned! :eek: |
check if prostreetonline.com isnt cheaper.
clutch should be broken in once installed....it's nothing special....only kevlar requires a break-in. |
It's been another few months and my Spec is holding up just fine. I think I either needed to break it in for a little longer than the 400miles or maybe it just needed to be hit pretty hard to bed it in or whatever. I've even tried lately hitting it really hard shifting into 4th and 5th while keeping my foot in the throttle. No more slipping.
Still unknown how long it will last. The other problems I've read with the Spec's failures happen pretty much in the first few hundred miles. I've got a couple thousand on mine now. I really like the stock pedal feel. I can run it really hard in the low gears. Spec also makes a 1.8StageII+ to check out... holds a little more power. You guys of course will be the first to know if I ever have any problems with it.m |
