CXRacing Turbo kit?? bang for the buck or waste ?

I MENT TO SAY BANG FOR THE BUCK lol

Hey my name is johnny, i got a 1990 NA with a 93 motor with less than 30k on it from japan, im a COMPLETE noob when it comes to boost so im here to learn! ive been shopping around for a turbo kit but im scared of Chinese turbos/garrett knock offs. ive heard people have success with the chinese turbos and some fail. ive got about 2,000 saved for fuel management and a turbo kit. i wanna be sitting above 160 Hp so iono if i should just save up for a better kit or take the plunge. i also got a ACT stage 1 clutch.

thanks for the info

Welcome.

At $2k, just go with a Begi Shanghai with MS. Complete kit, lots of options, great upgrade path.

thanks for the feedback! that kit doesnt come with a intercooler :( i guess i could buy the cxracing intercooler kit for 400 bucks i heard they make a good intercooler kit.

I've heard that the CXRacing manifolds are prone to cracking, but haven't had any personal experience.

A Cxracing universal intercooler kit is $170-$200 off of eBay the last I checked.

1) Do not purchase ANYTHING until you've done your homework and stickies/faq's and know exactly what you want and where to get it.
2) Save up more money if you want more than 160whp, if not then you don't even really need the intercooler at that level.
3) stay away from ebay "kits" they suck dick and most of the time you can put together your own setup for the same price but using proven working parts.

You have a 1.6 so it should be easy as hell if you do your research and start looking around.

Don't make the mistake of thinking you have to buy everything all at once. With a $2k budget, I would strongly recommend you take a careful and thoughtful approach... and not buy a kit right away.

With the price of the Megasquirt PnP full standalone ECU (or an even cheaper unit made for you by somebody here on the forum), there is no reason to spend money on bandaids anymore. For under $1k, you can have a full standalone MS, big injectors, and a wideband. Install that stuff and learn to tune while naturally aspirated... isntall turbo parts over the course of many months piece by piece and tune as you go.

You can keep your eyes peeled in the classifieds until somebody sells the rest of a complete kit, or piece your parts together from a vendor over time. Buying the CXRacing kit or any of the eBay kits will bring nothing but frustration.

Another way is to mix&match. You can find a turbo/mani/dp here in the classifieds right now. Then buy a crossover tube and the oil/water lines from BEGi, and run non-intercooled at 5-6psi until you can afford an IC, then run 10-12psi. Even if it takes you a year to get your setup good and finished, you'll know every nut and bolt, why it's there, how to fix it, and you'll probably end up buying very quality stuff.

What size injectors to startout with with n/a? 550cc??? Remember I'm still learning haha and I got a wideband o2 already with a pillar mount gauge any recommendations on injector brands or links?? Thanks so much for the info guys

dustinb 03-14-2011 08:57 PM

Go through the ebay turbo kits sticky in this section of the forum. It'll give you lots of reasons not to go this route, or at least let you know what you're getting in to.

TrickerZ 03-14-2011 08:59 PM

I'd also recommend getting the megasquirt or other ECU first, tune it without changing anything else, then buy injectors (550cc is more than enough and will get you far past your 160hp goal), tune, buy turbo, mani, dp, tune, buy intercooler setup, tune, buy boost controller, tune. That's pretty much how I'm doing it this second time around. I have all the parts already, though, so I'll install turbo and intercooler together.

If you get an ECU first, I would get all the options you think you'd ever want. Have it be able to handle low impedance injectors so you don't need big ugly resistors and any other things you may want like a crank angle sensor, electronic boost control, launch control, etc. Nice to haves are fairly cheap for the megasquirt, so just get them.

Read the FAQ stickies, and the DIY turbo sticky, that will answer your question.

But the short answer is no, you don't need 550s, 460s are plenty for a 1.6, you'll have your hands full maxing those out if you're new.

We use RX-7 OEM injectors, they're cheap ($100ish a set) and are plug and play.
