drove it to work, few problems

Well, I drove the beast to work today. Got the exhaust reconnected. Runs SOOOOOO much better and sounds much nicer as well. My first obvious problem is my lack of support. I dont yet have my emanage in as I cannot for the life of me understand how to hook up the pressure sensor. I have been in touch with olderguy, but threw no fault of his own I'm still in the dark.
My other problem in my BOV. Its a turbo XS type S VTA. Everything works if I have heavy acceleration and let off right away. However I get turkey gobble if I let off slowly. If I rev it while sitting in the driveway I can see the piston move up slightly. Should I shim it until it doesnt move? And after reading some posts I searched on I put my hand over to check for suction, and got none so at idle it does not leak.
Really if someone can talk to me one on one about the e-manage and autotune on AIM it would SOOO helpfull. I've been searching on everything, but I just cant understand how it works for some reason. Thanks guys

Mach929 09-05-2006 08:23 PM

is your bov adjustable? if so it sounds like it's set a little too tight. Emanage with olderguys autotune really is pretty simple. I took the easy way out and got the boomslang harness. makes the emanage a 5 minute install. add another 30 minutes or so for the autotune.

Snowsurfer03 09-05-2006 08:51 PM

Mach929- 5 min to install e-manage w/boomslang??? Are you serious??? If so I'm in. I have been putting off the emanage because I hate messing w/ wires but if it really is plug and play!!!!

miataspeed1point6 09-05-2006 08:51 PM

My BOV is adjustable, but right now it is just working off the spring. No washers. And as for the emanage, when I bought the kit it was already installd on the ECU. I really need help with the pressure sensor for the autotune. PLEASE! help

Mach929 09-05-2006 09:33 PM

yeah it's just plug n play. http://www.boomslang.us/emanage.htm

a little expensive but so easy and 100% reversible with nothing hacked up on your main wiring harness.

I don't know a whole lot about the pressure sensor but basically it should be tapped into a boost/vacuum source under the hood and then connected to the emanage in the proper location. Bruce's map is probably already setup for it if you specified to him you've got one.

miataspeed1point6 09-05-2006 10:00 PM

Now keeping in mind I know nothing about the emanage, why can't I look at the map olderguy sent me in the emanage support tool? I dont have the emanage plugged in, but I thought that was just to change, add/delete or things like that. Can I not look at and practice on maps while the emanage is not hooked up?

Mach929 09-05-2006 10:33 PM

you should be able to

miataspeed1point6 09-05-2006 11:51 PM

Ok update! I put the e-manage and olderguys autotune in. When I blow into the hose the red LED comes on, score! :bigtu: Now 2 problems have popped up, seems all to common to me. My first problem is I dont have a connection for the boost plug, but from a search I found out people usually source it from a computer. The 2nd is my serial cable didnt come with the software...so now my computer wont work with my emanage!! GAH!!! In the mean time my car pings like mad at idle, thankfully work is such a short drive away.

Braineack 09-06-2006 12:01 AM

download the software online somewhere...I used to have it...I'm sure you can find the link....should be on a yahoo forum. And yes most people use the CD audio cable.

Newbsauce 09-06-2006 01:06 AM

In response to your discussion about the turkey gobble w/ the turboXS's:

I had the type H-RFL on my GSX and it took me forever to find the right setting where it would still vent well, but not gobble. They are stubborn pieces to adjust. Don't give up.

Jefe 09-06-2006 07:07 AM

You could try a lighter spring. I am having the same issue with my turbo xs type s. It worked great with the .42 compressor, but I recently changed to the .60 compressor and it gobbles like mad. I bought three or four different springs, and have been experimenting--but no real luck. The piston moves, but is not reacting fast enough to release pressure..

My next consideration, and probably should have been my first, will be to enlarge the the hose barbs and the line feeding the BOV. If that doesn't solve it I will revert back to the Bosch recirc. The line is now 1/4"--IIRC the instructions call for a 5/16".

brgracer 09-06-2006 10:00 AM

Software is here: http://www.mohdparts.com/emanage/#E-...20&%20Firmware Look at the veeeerrrryyyy bottom of the long ass page.

miataspeed1point6 09-06-2006 05:15 PM

I found the support tool on the yahoo forum (thanks braineack!) and installed it on my computer...but now my stupid serial cable wont work. I think its because the cable I have needs software and the PO didnt send it to me.
Well, on the the good news! I set the timing to 5-6 degrees BTDC. Bogs like mad but no more ping, and thats what I was after. As for the turkey gobble, I forgot I have no hood. The noise I'm hearing is coming from the intake, not the BOV. I think its just the suction noise of the intake being flicked by the turbo fans? The BOV makes a perfect pssew every time, and at the same time the intake makes the strange noise.
As for the autotune, when I enter boost my red LED comes on, my engine temporarily seems to loose a tiny bit of power and my check engine light comes on. I read to not leave the engine in the pressure switch activation area as the engine will buck, so I'm assuming the temp. loss in power is normal. As for the CEL, dont know?
Thanks for putting up with so many questions, I do search ALOT but not all the answers are clear to me.

Braineack 09-06-2006 07:44 PM

Do you have a USB-Serial Cable? Does it have any identifying marks? I just installed a driver today to controll the same type of cable, it may work for you if windows is looking for "USB-Serial Controller"

miataspeed1point6 09-06-2006 08:03 PM

Windows is searching for that exact thing. The cable is silver with smoked clear connectors. It has a orange LED on the serial end. Only company mark I can find is a V with its right half a swooshie thingy. Its called "USB-Serial Converter Model No: U209-000-R".

Braineack 09-06-2006 08:52 PM

try this bitch on for size:

miataspeed1point6 09-06-2006 09:51 PM

braineack your awsome!!! thats the one. But for some reason my comp isnt unzipping the file. My moms gonna check it out tommorow as shes much better with computers than me. THANKS MAN!!

Edit: I opened the file up and there are no executable programs...what gives?

Jefe 09-07-2006 06:56 AM

did you download WINRAR first? google will find you a free download...

Braineack 09-07-2006 08:48 AM

you'll want to unzip them somewhere.

Then right-click on my computer and go to properties.

then hardware and device manager.

the "USB-Serial Controller" should already be showing with a yellow icon.

right-click on that and say update driver.

install from a specific location.

browse for the folder you unzipped everything

and it should install the drivers.

miataspeed1point6 09-08-2006 01:04 AM

Once again braineack to the rescue! I dont know what I would do if it weren't for this forum!:bigtu: Now my comp works with the cable, went and tried to plug into the emanage and no luck. But I only tried COM port 1, so I think I just need to adjust that. But its too late to be messing with this computer.
This saturday looks like a finishing up day. Both downpipe gaskets are leaking, but I have replacements here. I got my new air filter so I can put my hood back on, fuel injectors and vortec (to replace the JR peice) will go in and all should be well. I'm DYING to get tuning with the emanage as I'm having such a hard time understanding it. I think some time actually using the program will clear up alot of my questions.
The filter I got is a Green brand filter, I think its made by K&N? Anyone use one before? Seems to be well built, reuseable, washable and needs to be oiled.

Graf Koks 09-08-2006 10:09 AM

jeah the green filters are almost the same as the k&n stuff but not so popular a friend of mine use this filter on a corsa turbo but they are hard to find an not street leagel in germany so went for the k&n

Braineack 09-08-2006 10:28 AM

It's most likely going to end up being com 4 or 5. Nothing wrong with Green Filters, same thing as K&N.

miataspeed1point6 09-08-2006 06:21 PM

MY EMANAGE TALKED TO MY COMPUTER!!! I almost didn't belive it at first! Quick question, does the car need to be running to import or export data? I tried to import with just the key on and it said "corresponding" and the loading bar didn't move. Tommorow I'm going to run olderguys instructions to get it started. I'm going to search for all the information I can on the emanage, is there any sources you guys would reccommend? And for the bad news, my downpipe gaskets were leaking but its my manifold gasket thats leaking and causing the noise. So now I need to pull it all off again to replace it. I'm almost there!!

BrokeEnthusiast 09-08-2006 06:39 PM

your running into a lot of problems, but keep it up. Its these things that make the final result soooooo much better

miataspeed1point6 09-08-2006 06:58 PM

Yeah this whole build has been a pile of problems! But every time I solve one I get a good sence of acomplishment. One additional question, after searching the emanaged miatas forum I found a site that sells the boost sensor for $99 and harness for $30. If I bought just the harness, could I not cut the end off and attatch it to my 3 wire MAP sensor and use the other end to get the stock emanage connection?

Graf Koks 09-09-2006 06:01 PM

i am looking forward to buy a e manage so i download the instruction manuel from the greddy site (suport tool) so i can figuerd out how hard it is to tune this thing cause it´s not so popular in germany maybe you should download the manuels ....

Heres how I have been driving around since monday
Attachment 217381
Underhood temps have been very low!

Here is my torn apart interior, and the air filter I need to fab up a bracket for so I can put my hood on, will be doing that monday
Attachment 217382

A better veiw, here you can see how big my stupid air filter is from the JRSC (SHITTY!!) and why it wont fit.

And here is my oil return. If you haven't seen my post about it, this alone took me 7 hours to finish. Its -10AN line, I think it makes the engine bay look pretty clean. (Feed is -4AN)
Attachment 217383

My power steering line was loose and leaked all over, hence the buildup of dirt. Will be getting to that and my valve cover shortly. Thanks for looking!

miataspeed1point6 09-10-2006 12:29 AM

yeah, 7. I read of people doing it in an hour to 45 min. I just dont know how they can do it! I just got back from my towns local tuner hangout, and everyone seems to think my car can do 0-60 in like 2 seconds. "a turbo in a miata?! thats crazy". We don't have enough miatas here in detroit.Sometimes I feel like the only one:cry:

magnamx-5 09-10-2006 01:19 AM

7 hours you should be so lucky i spent a month on getting mine to where it wouldn't leak :crx:

bripab007 09-10-2006 10:04 AM

I mean, like, what were you doing, exactly, for those 7 hours? I don't understand.

yea id like to know also, i got mine done in about an hour and i really didnt know what i was doing.

miataspeed1point6 09-11-2006 12:32 AM

hour 1 was moving the p.s. hose out of the way and trying to get the damn 7/8ths inch step bit started. Hours 2 and 3 were spent drilling the hole. I was TERRIFIED of hitting the oil pickup, so I took my time. Due to using a step bit I had a really steep angle on the hole I drilled. Hours 4 and 5 were spent using the 1/2" pipe tap to bore the angle out of the hole. I spent a whole 15 minutes actually threading the hole. Then I spent hour 6 and 1/2 cleaning out the shavings. I made sure it was CLEANED OUT! The last 1/2 hour was the worst, I put in my oil bung. I was so nervous of stripping it out from over tightening. Then I put on my 4 tubes of JB Weld and hoped REALLY hard it worked. And it did. I walked away with one important lesson....take the time to get a 23/32nds drill bit, will make life ALOT easier!
