Dyno, new Bell Engineering turbo..

Go easy on me, I still don't have my car back, should be in the next couple of weeks. This is one of 3 or 4 proto/development cars that Corky and his staff at Bell Engineering have been working on.

New to turbo Miata, not new to love of cars.

2001 LS, ~ 56k miles, stock everything, reflashed ecu, want to maintain emissions correctness... don't want to be failing yearly inspections the other engine management methods deliver. Stock injectors.

Only 'upgrades' are a mishimoto radiator, enthuza 2.5" exhaust, ACT stage 1 clutch.

Turbo is a chinacharger. I have NO info about size or any of the specifics yet, will be educated when I drive from Houston to San Antonio to retrieve it shortly

What I find exciting is these numbers were produces on a day when the temps were in the 90's*! We get about 4 cool months each year down in west Houston/Katy, Texas. Will run MUCH stronger when ambient temps aren't so damn high!!

This was from back in mid-May, it was boosting at 6psi, made 194whp/180~tq.

As you see, it's now just under 9psi.

Discuss....

Don't ask too detailed questions, I don't have the car in my garage yet, still at BEGI.

Get excited, they apparently hit a home run with this new system! ;)

This is their new alpha whatchamacallit package right? What about it is new other than the exhaust manifold design?

Dyno plot looks just like anything bell and fm have been putting out since the late 90's.

I guess the only difference is reflash vs AIDs, so.....not bad I guess.

12AFR at 9psi might be ok on the purest 93 on a street car, but that aint gonna fly on 91 and especially CA 91, and especially on the track. It will melt pistons/ringlands.

I'm also curious about pricing.

230whp on stock injectors, eh?

18psi 07-27-2014 02:51 PM

Next up: 300whp on stock injectors.

Because Alpha Omega

Leafy 07-28-2014 10:56 AM

At least the AFRs from this reflash look legit.

soviet 07-28-2014 03:01 PM

How do you only spool 8psi by 4k rpm???

$300 china charger?

18psi 07-28-2014 03:21 PM

and likely no boost control, just wastegate can

Chinachargers generally have pretty horrible spool characteristics. It's the hidden price for spending so little money on a turbo.

albumleaf 07-28-2014 11:02 PM

Does the Alpha Omega come as one solid cast piece to avoid BEGI shipping mishaps?

pdexta 07-29-2014 08:58 AM

You would think they'd use a garrett turbo for their "look how awesome our new stuff is" car. My '99 with a log manifold and a GT2871 with stock pistons/head would hit 8psi by 3200rpms and that wasn't impressive by any means. Giving up another 800rpms of spool with this "new and improved" kit seems really disappointing even considering the chinacharger.

Leafy 07-29-2014 09:00 AM

but dawg they're making 230hp on the stock injectors. Its a new record!!!1!!one!!!!

Maybe the customer wanted a china charger and did not want to pay extra for a real Garrett. When I was at Begi in April they had 4-6 cars with various configurations of their new setup. So they will probably be dynoing a few different ones with various turbos eventually.

Stock injectors?

My brain is full of fuck.

Ryephile 07-29-2014 10:00 AM

I'd hazard the car also has an adjustable FPR to crank up the rail pressure to get enough flow out of the stock injectors. Even then, the rail pressure is going to have to be pretty high to get 230wHP.

The things that Corky listed on the other thread reads like a list of "no duh". Aluminum boost tubes? Yea that should've been de facto last decade.

Intercooler internal aerodynamics is something the aftermarket rarely pays attention to, but the OEMs spend lots of time perfecting. So when Corky says "slightly improved" IC, that tells me it's still way behind the times.

I'm looking to replace my inherited old-skool GReddy setup, so I do look forward to seeing actual pics of this new BEGI setup.

Can't speak for the other owners of the 2 or 3 other cars that are part of this proto, but I was given a choice of either.

Even Corky referenced the 'wimpy ass journal bearing chinachargers' in another post.

I only know of one other owner and he and I chose Chinese.

Money was/is a factor in my case. BEGI feels like if a customer is given a choice, and finances are a factor, the chinachargers have been a decent alternative.

Are there MUCH, MUCH better? Yes, we all know that.

But if you're wanting to go f/I and want to upgrade later, maybe the cc isn't that bad of a start.

Also, to remind folks, I'm on stock injectors and a reflash ecu, not bad to hit 230whp on those limitations.

No doubt the injectors are at 100% duty cycle. No track, limited autocross, just making the car have the grunt it should have had from the factory. Looks bad ass, stops on a dime, outhandles anything I've ever owned in the last 30 years. Freeway entrances, wide open expanses of road, safe places to wind out the engine are my new nirvana.

In my case, I've always wanted a turbo car and I ain't getting any younger, 49 yrs old. About 20 months ago, I satisfied my turbo lust, sort of...

Wife and I bought a 13' Kia Optima 2.0 turbo. It's hers.... The SXL, top-o-the-line trim.

I initially thought it was bad ass, making 275hp/270tq at the crank on 17psi out of 2 liters. I intend to put it on the lonestar dyno, the same on in the pic above when I get back to Spring Branch, TX... where BEGI and Lonestar Dyno are located. My guess is it'll make 235whp/don't have any idea of torque. It is fun for a front wheel drive 3400lb sedan and I move other cars around in the driveway so that when errands are run, I take the Kia.

Using the traditional 15-20% rear wheel drive loss figures, I reckon my NB is making 270 hp at the crank... 270-17%= 224.

That alone impresses the shit out of me. Less displacement, half the boost of the Kia.

But, to Kia's defense, it makes peak torque at 1700 rpms :)

Have I more than doubled the stock whp and wtq on my NB? Yes!

Am I going to have a huge grin on my face like the first time I ever got laid when I finally drive it boosted? Hells yes!

That is all

Only pic I could find quickly, this is WAY early in the process, like January early. Turbo is quite small as far as I know, not sure what it equates to in the big-boy scheme of things.
